White Sox Turn About Face On DH Role

Kenny Williams and Ozzie Guillen have been lying to you, White Sox fans.  All of the talk about how the roster is set and the DH rotation is ready to go is smoke.  The White Sox have finally figured out what we the great unwashed already knew.  This team is shaky offensively.

That's probably why it has surfaced that the White Sox have contacted the devil Scott Boras and expressed an interest in Johnny Damon. Damon's bat theoretically would shore up the Sox lineup while he could add something on defense.

Would Damon hit leadoff for the Sox, pushing Juan Pierre down to ninth?  Where would he play?  A platoon in center with Alex Rios?  Several days a week in right with Carlos Quentin?  As the regular DH in contrast with Ozzie Guillen's numerous statements to the contrary?

Is this move designed to bring in Damon or to take him away from the Tigers?  Does this send a clear message that the Tigers may be the team the Sox fear most or do the Sox fear the Twins with their recent acquisitions and want to keep one more potential all-star away from another potentially contending team?

And how will Damon, a Yankee veteran who spent  last year in New York with Nick Swisher, feel about entertaining an offer form the White Sox?  I guarantee you if he asks Swisher for a recommendation, Damon would just assume sign with the Washington Nationals.

My gut tells me that Damon will not sign with the Sox.  It would be great if he signed with Atlanta, but I get the feeling Damon wants to play in the American League.  The Sox will probably not offer him more than one year considering the number of outfielders they have both at the major league and minor league levels and given Damon's age (36.)

There are more questions than answers around this topic.  Don't look for Kenny and Ozzie to address them anytime soon.
