When Push Comes To Shove, Vinny's Okay

Those of you who may frequent this small corner of the interweb know that I write something about the NBA, it must either be a slow news day or I finally found something compelling to write about.  Most of the time I avoid it like balls avoid Juan Pierre's bat.

That said, I'm fascinated by the dust up between John Paxson and Vinny Del Negro.

For starters, the Bulls will have made the playoffs twice under Del Negro's watch, so he must be doing something right.  He's got a young core of talented players including Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah and with the addition of some prime free agents in the off season, the Bulls could be a dangerous team next season.

So, the big question is will Vinny Del Negro be around to see it?  Sure, the guy isn't Red Auerbach or Phil Jackson.  From what I've read he's not even Dick Motta.  But despite being a frequent media and fan target, the guy has reached the promised land twice with teams that quite frankly aren't that good.  And that's after he was like the eighth choice for the job in the first place.

Certainly, after the way the Bulls played earlier this year, you'd think Del Negro would be out of work, but the guy has more lives than Morris the Cat and he's still standing, at least long enough to see his team probably get waxed by Cleveland in the first round.  Then he's probably going to join such vaulted names as Doug Collins, Bill Cartwright, Tim Floyd, Phil Johnson and Jerry Sloan as former Bulls coaches.

Paxson on the other hand should be immediately dismissed from his position as team president.  While I am all for boys being boys, getting shoved around by your boss is not something I condone.  Give Vinny credit.  He didn't fight back knowing if he did, his name would be mud for any future opportunities he might pursue. Well played, sir.

If you are The Chairman, you need to look at this not with the loyalty and the love you feel for Paxson, but as The Chairman.  What potential coach wants to come to a team where a high ranking team official comes into your office and physically confronts you.  For all the good things Paxson has done, this is a deal breaker.  Think of this as the practice drill for when Kenny and Ozzie finally get to the stage in their relationship where they take it outside to settle it like men.

I don't know much about Vinny as a coach, but I do know this: The guy showed great restraint in a tough situation, putting the team and the future ahead of his desire to clock his boss.  That shows he is forward thinking and quick on his feet.  How bad can that be in a basketball coach?
