It's Only May 4th And White Sox Fans Are Pushing The Panic Button
I think it's time that Chicago White Sox fans calmed down. I think that it's time for White Sox nation (if there is such a place) to take a collective deep breath. Because I can't believe what I'm reading out there. I've rolled my eyes back to often the last few days it may become a permanent condition. To those of you that want to fire Ozzie (which I addressed the other day) relax. It's not going to happen, so deal with it. Besides, it's only May 4. We can revisit this at the end of the season. Even Vinny Del Negro kept his job until the end of the season and he was a .500 coach.
To the camp that wants to back the truck up now and trade for Adrian Gonzalez or whomever else, you need to chillax, big time. Bringing Gonzalez on board now is not going to happen. The Padres are having a great year with Gonzalez being a key part of that. They won't try to sell until the air comes out of their balloon. Besides, the Sox have a decent first baseman named Paul Konerko, who was just named AL player of the week and leads the AL in home runs. Trading him in any form of fashion right now would be totally irresponsible. On the other hand, extending his contract would be a good idea right about now.
To those calling for a sacrificial execution of hitting coach Greg Walker, please step to the rear of the bus. We hear form you every year at this time, and quite frankly, it bores us. Walk does his job. The hitters like and respect him. He can't come to the plate and hit for them. As well as he prepares them, their bat which they are holding in their hand must hit the ball. It's like blaming Jenny Craig for Kirstie Alley's weight gain. Jenny can only recommend what to eat, Kirstie has follow the plan.
Kids, it's way too early to panic, it's way too early to be ticked off and it's way too early to fire bomb the team. This isn't the Bears coming out and losing their first four games. That's panic time. This is a slow start from a group that can and will play better. Jake Peavy showed up last night. Sure, you say, against the Royals. But he still looked pretty unhittable last night and what's important is he was throwing STRIKES.
I don't know that this team is better than Minnesota or Detroit but I do know they aren't as bad as April. In may the Sox are 2-1. They are 6-4 in their last ten games, four games under five hundred and improving daily. A few more two out hits and they'll be right back in it, simple as that. You think there aren't other decent teams that scuffled in April? How about the Red Sox or the Angels? Pick them to win division titles? They are both under .500 right now. How about everyone's pre-season darlings, Atlanta? They are sitting dead last in the NL East. Think they'll be there at the end of the season? Think the Rangers will still be leading the AL West in September?
Here's the formula: Twelve out of twenty. You need to win twelve out of every twenty you play to play for a division title. While the Sox have some ground to make up (four games, they will get there. And when they do, we'll be happy to serve you some crow. With no catsup.
