Quickshots: Wishing Doesn't Make It So, But It Does Get You Re-Elected
- Ah, those Illinois legislators. Looking at the political landscape and desperately wanting to galvanize their constituencies, the chic thing to do in heavily Hispanic Districts is to implore others not to do business in Arizona. Take State Senators Martin Sandoval of Cicero and Terry Link of Waukegan, who want the Chicago White Sox to abandon their two-year old facility at Camelback Ranch in Glendale to protest the new Arizona immigration law. What these guys fail to realize is that there is a lot of money on the table and it isn't practical for the Sox to just take off and leave. But then again, just by bringing it up and being quoted in the paper, both these pols score hero points with their constituents. BTW, Waukeagan has a large undocumented population.
- The remembrances of the late Tiger announcer Ernie Harwell should be a life lesson to everyone. From the old to the current players, everyone loved and respected the guy. They say he was kind and wise and when he spoke, the players, even the ones who were a quarter his age, listened intently. He was good at when he did professionally and he was an even better human being. All of us should strive to be the kind of person Ernie Harwell was.
- We're six weeks into a new season and already White Sox fans are trying to unload players with slow starts . After all A.J. Pierzynski has done for this club over the course of his Sox career, cut him some slack. Even if he hit .200, he is a great influence on the pitchers, which is just as important as him supplying offense.
- The great taser incident in Philly is causing controversy. I've got to think that the lawyers huddled together after that fan was tasered Monday night and decided there was too much liability to continue the practice. Personally, I think it's exactly why tasers were created. And if some nut job and his opportunistic attorney want to bring suit (in order to force a settlement), bring it on. I can't see a judge ruling against a team for taking care of someone who could be dangerous to players, coaches and field personnel. Anyone remember Tom Gamboa ? So, once you enter the field of play, being tased should be something you have to deal with. Personally, I'd tase anyone who interfered with a batted ball. That would learn 'em!
- Sounds like after leaving the ballpark early Tuesday night after being yanked from the lineup, Milton Bradley had a talk with his agent. His agent probably reminded Milton that Seattle was his last chance and if he didn't sit down with management and make it right, he probably couldn't find a roster spot in an industrial softball league. Bradley did that yesterday , asking the Mariners for help in dealing with "personal issues." He'll be evaluated and being whatever treatment is felt appropriate. How do you treat being an ass, anyway?
- Adrian Gonzalez of the Padres says he will boycott the 2011 All-star game if it is played in Arizona. Hey Adrian, get selected first, then call us. (Crooks And Liars)
- Don't people go to the ballpark to watch baseball anymore? Is it a ballpark or a food court ?
- When it comes to politics, Keith Olbermann and I are at total opposite ends of the spectrum. But when it comes to sports, I have a lot of respect for the guy. He's probably second to Bob Costas on the baseball knowledge scale. To say he shouldn't be allowed to write for MLB.com or be on NBC because he is a hardcore lefty politically is as asinine and as farfetched as some of Olbermann's politics. Besides, if you removed all the liberals from media, you'd have very few people left. The Rush vs. Olbermann argument has no merit here because Olbermann is a trained sports journalist where Rush is just a big fan. (The Big Lead)
- I cannot understand why people hate the Cleveland Indians so much. (Waiting for Next Year via Yardbarker)
- Which baseball fans consume the most hot dogs ? (Consumerist)
