White Sox Fans Need To Look In The Mirror
For the longest time, White Sox fans dismissed Chicago Cubs fans as a bunch of entitled, yuppie whiners. When things got tough for the Cubs, the fans would demand new players, a new manager or a new GM. In 2003, they demanded Dusty Baker, then literally ran him out of town three years later. When Lou Piniella took over, they were drooling all over themselves, now most of them would gladly drive Lou to O'Hare. They are never happy. The past two years the White Sox have had some tough times. Rather than suck it up and remain true to the mission, Sox fans have been whining like babies. Last year, it was the "we want Beckham crowd." Now, some of them actually want the kid, at one time dubbed "The Savior" sent back to Charlotte to get his batting stroke back.
There's the crowd that can't wait for Tyler Flowers to arrive. Hey, if the Sox wanted a defensively challenged catcher who strikes out a lot, I'm sure Toby Hall is available. There are those clamoring for Jordan Danks, also at least a season away. And the Daniel Hudson fans who can't wait to see their hero grab a rotation spot. Others want to cut Mark Kotsay, who although he hasn't hit yet is still valuable due to his ability to play multiple positions well.
The most perplexing group is the one who are demanding that manager Ozzie Guilen get fired. Believe me when I tell you that you are making a big mistake there. It's not Ozzie's fault Gavin Floyd can't find his curveball or Juan Pierre can't hit one. Managers make one or two moves during the game and dictate matchups, they do not go out and actually play. The White Sox lack of success this year is not necessarily of Ozzie's making, but when you don't win people tend to assign blame. Firing Ozzie or Greg Walker now sends a signal that the ship is sinking. It's way too early for that.
If, by say July 4th, this team is still is in a funk, then you consider reloading. Maybe you move the parts you can like Andruw Jones, J.J. Putz, Bobby Jenks and Pierzynski. But know if you do that, August and September are going to be useless. You might as well start watching Bears training camp and I am far more optimistic about a White Sox turnaround than the Bears finishing ahead of the Vikings and Packers this year.
If 2005 did anything besides make all of us who have followed this team our whole lives weep openly, it was spoil us. White Sox fans expect to compete for championships because we know it is attainable. Yet, we are perfectly willing to cast those responsible adrift because we expect more and more. Hey, I have news for you. The Twins are good. The Tigers are good. The Royals, especially with Ned Yost in command, are better. There are no free spots on the bingo board anymore.
You need to take a deep, cleansing breath and ride out the storm. Or else the current may blow you somewhere you thought you'd never thought you'd wind up...on the North side.
