Peavy Needs A Little Less Talk And A Lot More Action
We all enjoy hearing from Chicago White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy. He plays baseball with a football mentality and if you know anything about Alabama, where Peavy hails from, you know that runs pretty deep. But in his last couple of starts, whatever hopes for a turnaround from him have vanished and leaves you standing, scratching your head saying "we gave up four pitchers for this?"While it's true, Peavy is an intense, team oriented player, his results have been less than satisfactory this year. Peavy wasn't acquired to be a number three or four guy, he was acquired to anchor an already strong rotation featuring one veteran pitcher and two young guns. Oh, he's anchored it alright. He's been like a boat anchor dropping all the way to the bottom.
The declaration that he's fixed whatever was wrong was nor only ill advised, it was apparently premature. Peavy is back to where he was at the start of the season, no movement on his fast ball, his curve and slider not in the zone and everything 180 degrees out of synch.
Last night against the Indians is a prime example. In the the third inning, Peavy gave up a home run to light hitting shortstop Jason Donald, the first home run in Donald's career. Then, one hitter later, Shinn-Soo Choo blasted a Peavy offering back to Choo's homeland of North Korea. But the inning wasn't over yet. With a man on second and two out, Peavy gave up a hard single to Russell Brnyan, who has modeled several uniforms, driving in yet another. These ain't the Yankees. These are the Cleveland Indians. And yet, in the third and sixth innings Jake Peavy made them look more like the Indians from the 1990's than this decades.
Granted, he got little support, but still.
Jake, please. Do us all a favor. Take a vow of silence, shut up, figure out what the hell is wrong and then pitch. Walk the walk Jake.
