Will This Be Seminal 2010 White Sox Moment? Please?
For a day all was fine in White Sox land. Falling behind 3-0 then 6-2, the Sox came back and beat the pesky last place Cleveland Indians 8-7. The game showcased some of the Sox offensive talent, including the MIA Carlos Quentin, who had the game winning two-run single in the bottom of the seventh (on an 0-2 pitch.) Paul Konerko hit his seventeenth home run of the year and the Sox got some excellent relief work from Tony Pena, J.J. Putz and Bobby Jenks.
On the other side of the coin, Mark Buehrle stunk again, giving up six runs in three innings. Buehrle is a pitcher who relies on location and getting ahead in the count. If he falls behind and can't spot his off speed pitches, he has no alternative but to come at you with a fast ball. Unfortunately, his fast ball isn't that fast and he gets whacked around. Lately, he has not been able to spot anything, his control has been poor and the movement on his pitches non-existent.
Buehrle is a left handed Greg Maddux type of pitcher, but if he doesn't have his location, he's more of a batting practice pitcher. I don't know how Don Cooper is going to address this, but start with is movement, spin and rotation. His pitches seem flat lately.
You just wish that somehow, over this day off, the team would get the memo that they are not that bad and start playing some inspired baseball. It's admirable that these guys, as bad as they've been, got up off the mat yesterday. It shows something about their character and the fact that they truly want to win. Now they have to just do it.
The problem with this ball club all year is it's inconsistency and their inability to put a streak together. It's like trying to start a car with a dying battery. You crank the car and it turns over for ten seconds then dies again. So, you crank it again and then, just when you think it's over, it dies again. Maybe Ozzie needs some new jumper cables.
