Cups Runneth Over: World, BP, Lord Stanley's. Cubs-Sox Packs No Punch
While the Chicago Blackhawks are shepherding Lord Stanley's Cup around the city today, there is another cup up for grabs, the BP Cup, which goes to the winner of the White Sox-Cubs crosstown series.
Two days after having a team win a championship, how intense do you think people are about this? Seriously. Two underachieving baseball teams playing six meaningless games.
Sure, there's the usual Cubs-Sox fireworks, but still, this is not a big deal. The players certainly don't think it is. If you asked them, they'd much rather be playing the Cardinals or the Twinkies where the games actually mean something.
The Sox look in good shape for at least today. The Cubs start Randy Wells who has had two very shaky starts yesterday, Couple that with the fact the Cubs used lots of pitching in their ten inning loss to the Brewers yesterday and the injuries to Aramis Ramirez and Derrick Lee and this could be a good day for the silver and black. Jake Peavy is 3-2 lifetime against the Cubs with a sub three ERA. Of course, he's only 1-2 at Wrigley, so that could factor in.
The Sox will be without one of their hottest players and best gloves Omar Vizquel, who has returned home to Venezuela to deal with some family issues. Of course, the Comcast reporter conducting the post game interviews yesterday didn't get the memo because he asked Omar how he felt about locking horns with the Cubs starting Friday. Sidebar: I'd fire that guy for being that unprepared and embarassing. Seriously.
I would imagine that the Cubs have arranged for a couple of Blackhawks to stop by and sing the seventh inning stretch. It may not be Twoes and Kane (people would go nuts for Adam Burish right now) but it certainly be a great moment as both Sox and Cub fans could celebrate.
Yeah, this seems as exciting as the World Cup to me. And that's as exciting as watching paint dry.
