What Could Eventually Be A White Sox Fans Worst Nightmare
The Florida Marlins have fired their manager Freddie Gonzalez this morning. While you may wonder why this may have an impact on the White Sox, there is a quite logical theory I've had for some time.Let's say at the end of the year, Ozzie, Kenny and the Chairman decide someone has to go. To save face for an organization that would be insane to fire him, Ozzie applies for and is hired by the Marlins as their new manager.
Don't laugh. Ozzie has a house in Miami. He would appeal to the huge Hispanic community in that city and he is bi-lingual, which from a marketing perspective is outstanding. He also has ties to the Marlins, having served a their third base coach prior to being hired by the White Sox in 2004.
Yes, i am aware that Ozzie is under contract until 2012, but that means nothing. If the Sox give him permission to talk to the Marlins, that means that they will rip up his contract. Sometimes, teams even get a few prospects out of a deal like this. Ozzie may even initiate it, thinking he would be happier living at home all the time instead of just part of the time. Who would blame him for that?
Hopefully, the Sox will continue to win, Ozzie and Kenny will continue to co-exist and everything will remain as it is. Despite his brutal honesty and his sometime misguided English, Ozzie is a very good manager. His players like and respect him and enjoy playing for him. Replacing him wouldn't be easy. Of course, it is highly possible that if Ozzie did leave, The Chairman may hire Tony LaRussa who is in his last year with the Cardinals. It would be some kind of deal where the Genius would come in as field manager for a couple of years to groom someone before being elevated to some Scotty Bowman like adviser job.
Think about it it. It is entirely possible.
