Ozzie May Be Right, Sox Could Be Fine As Is

There are two games this season where the White Sox have stood out.  The first was the season opener against Cleveland when the Sox, powered by Paul Konerko's bat and Mark Buehrle's pitching and defense played one of the best total ballgames a White Sox team had played in sometime.  The second was last night against the Angels, where the Sox combined pitching, defense and timely hitting into a 9-2 win.

In last night's game, you saw everything Ozzie Guillen has been preaching since the off season: Speed, timely hitting, solid and dare I say spectacular defense, solid base running and contributions from everyone in the lineup.  That's what you got last night, especially from Carlos Quentin, who set the tone in the top of the first inning with a diving, fence crashing robbery of Torii Hunter.  Think Jermaine Dye could have gotten to that ball.  Nah, didn't think so.

The point is this was not the Pirates or the Nationals or even the Cubs.  These were the L.A. Angels, a team that came into play last night with a winning record and 46 wins.  Sure, they have some players out due to injury, but still.  Are the nay sayers still not taking the Sox seriously, especially since they are only one game off the pace in the AL Central?

The two games above highlight the best of the White Sox.  Sure, there have been games the Sox should have won (Saturday night is a good example) but lately there have been more wins than losses.  And the Sox have done it without adding an established player to the roster or dumping one of their opening day players like the embattled Andruw Jones or Mark Kotsay.  The Sox are finding ways to win and their pitching coming back to what everyone expected is the biggest difference.  Last night, Gavin Floyd held serve until his run support arrived and then it was "good night everybody, please drive home safely."

Are the White Sox the best team in the AL? No, but the best team doesn't always win the big trophy at the end of the year.  This team is clearly positioned to win the Central and as long as they don't wilt in the summer heat, they should be there at the end with or without any help from Adam Dunn, Prince Fielder or anyone else.  Besides, now that the Cuban Sandwich hit his first home run, who needs anyone else?
