White Sox Have Few Options For Acquiring Pitchers
Now that Cliff Lee has been sent to the Rangers, if White Sox GM Kenny Williams is looking for help for his starting rotation to replace the injured Jake Peavy, his options are dwindling.Houston ace Roy Oswalt wants nothing to do with the Sox , or so he says. He's ruled them, along with the Tigers out. Of course, Jake Peavy initially refused a trade to the White Sox, changed his mind and is seemingly very happy with the Sox except for the potentially career ending injury he suffered.
I don't know what Oswalt has against the Sox, other than they beat him and the Astros in the world series. I would imagine working under Don Cooper has to be good and while Ozzie has a reputation as being crazy, he certainly is a good manager. Maybe Oswalt, who is from Mississippi, wants to stay in the South. That pretty much leaves Atlanta and Tampa as trade partners. So, here's a guy who wants to be traded not wanting to be traded. Go figure. Must be because he's from Mississippi.
Other than Oswalt, the only other big name on the radar is Ted Lilly. Lately, Lilly has been more like a batting practice pitcher and his stock has gone down. The Mets are supposed to be hot after him and you wonder if the Yankees would be now that they have lost out on Lee. Sure, Lilly isn't the elite pitcher Lee is, but he would be a nice addition to the group the Yankees already have.
Steve Stone had a good suggestion yesterday afternoon on the Score. If Kenny truly believes that Daniel Hudson is not the answer and he needs another starter, look around at some losing teams. Surely, Pittsburgh, Baltimore or the D-Backs have someone the Sox could deal for (Edwin Jackson comes to mind.) Perhaps Paul Maholom from the Pirates. Does Livan Hernandez have enough left in his tank for the Sox to consider him? How about former Tiger Nate Robertson from Florida? The Sox don't need a top of the rotation guy, they need a back of the rotation guy who might bring their trade partner a couple of prospects and perhaps none on the A-list.
Before you send me the profane comments, I am fully aware that these are Cadillacs and most of them are seven year-old Hyundais. But sometimes, if it runs good and is dependable, that's all you need. Just don't do what you did with Peavy and buy one of those Toyotas that blows up.
Lightning Round
- I never thought I'd say this, but please root for the Twinkies the next couple of nights. Should Minnesota beat Detroit the next two games and the Sox sweep the Royals, guess who is in sole possession of first place at the All-Star break. How does that crow tase, you non-believers. It looks like Tiger fans hate the Twinkies as much as Sox fans do .
