Why Can't People Just Leave Tiger Woods Alone?
It was laughable to me last week at the British Open when Tiger Woods missed a putt, dropped an "F-bomb" and ignited a controversy. laughable because the man did absolutely, nothing wrong.Based on the weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth, you'd expect some people wanted to pin Eldrick to the ground and wash his mouth out with soap.
All of us at one time or another have gotten upset at work. The majority of us have probably used crude language to emphasize our displeasure. Tiger Woods is no different, his office just happens to be on a golf course and his work activities are performed in front of crowds and TV cameras.
Capturing Tiger in the moment is the best reality show there is. It's not staged, it's not coached, it's just raw, real time emotion from the most intense golfer on the planet. It is a perfect storm if you want to know what he's thinking and feeling when he, the best golfer in the world blows a putt. The answer is the same thing you would do.
This whole language thing is overrated any way. Cable TV routinely uses swear words on basic cable shows like "Rescue Me." Movies use F-bombs all the time and grab any uncut YouTube video of a comedian performing and chances are the F-bombs are as thick as flies around a dumpster. The point being is if you aren't desensitized to crude language by now, you have your head buried in the sand.
Yes, i know my father's generation considered F-bombs "gutter language." But in this generation and especially in the one after it, not so much. Everybody swears and few, if any are offended by it. The only people that are have been advised by attorney that this could be an HR violation.
So, in a world where people routinely use curse words in normal, everyday conversation, why should we act surprised and indignant when Tiger Woods lets one loose? The guy has enough problems (and I'm not defending those issues) to deal without having to be taken to the wood shed for his language. He's out there doing his job and he's frustrated. Maybe you lost a sale. Maybe your boss ticked you off. Maybe your client rejected your design. So, you lash out linguistically. See, you are more like Tiger than you thought.
