In Defense Of Bobby Jenks
I understand the weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth surrounding Chicago White Sox closer Bobby Jenks. I also wonder if we are getting the whole story. How is his calf holding up? Is he having some mechanical issue where his sinker doesn't sink or he's having problems with his velocity? Unfortunately, these are issues that need to come to a swift resolution if the Sox plan on winning the central division. That said, I don't have a problem with Ozzie going with a "bullpen by committee" approach should Jenks continue to flounder. I think the best candidate for the closer role is J.J. Putz as he not only has the stuff but the experience as well. I know there is the whole Sergio Santos fan club out there that thinks he's ready, but he's not. I think the way Ozzie has handled him this season has been brilliant, keeping him out of sticky situations until he truly learns how to pitch. Santos stuff is great, but he's never gone this far into a season as a pitcher before and that does have some baring on it.
As far as Jenks is concerned, he needs some video and side work with Coop to maybe straighten out some things and then, put him right back on the horse. It's funny how one moment a player is the toast of the town and the next minute he is a bum that everyone volunteers to drive to airport. No one has a more slippery slope than the closer. No one is under a bigger spotlight.
We've seen this before with Jenks and sometimes pitchers, just like hitters get into funks. He's always worked his way out of them. He has given the White Sox some pretty good efforts over the years. He's not old enough to be washed up. Let him work it out and see if that helps. If not, Putz is a great fallback. In the end though, the guy you probably want out there is Jenks.
