College Football Saturday In Review

It was a quiet week in college football.  Here are some of the highlights:

  • Alabama waxed San Jose State 48-3 and would have had even more had they not fumbled the ball in the red zone.  Bama was supposed to win like this, so there were no surprises here.  The only thing that was interesting was how well Bama played in the opening game.  Even good teams need a half to get up to speed, but not these guys.  Of course, Penn State won't be so easy next week even if it is at home.  I just can see Nick Saban during that game shouting across the field to Joe Paterno "Get off my lawn, old man!."
  • Wisconsin seemed to shoot themselves in the foot several times before getting it together in the third quarter and taking out UNLV.  They should have a much easier time Saturday against SJSU.
  • Georgia was very impressive in their win over LA Lafayette.  They'll need that momentum if they want to keep Mark Richt employed after this year.
  • Oklahoma could drop a little in the polls following their squeaker vs. Utah State.
  • The most misleading lopsided win of the day belonged to Arkansas, who beat a 1AA team 44-3.  Whoo hoo!
  • New Mexico may be the worst 1A school in the country, getting annihilated by Oregon 72-0.  If Mike Locksley doesn't have enough to worry about with all the lawsuits against him, this is just another nail in his coffin. And it won't get easier as New Mexico meets Texas tech next weekend.  Tommy Tuberville is certainly not going to let up on them as he is trying to erase the memory of Mike Leach from the Tech faithful.
  • Vanderbilt got absolutely robbed by the officials in the waning minutes of their 23-21 loss to Northwestern.  The officials tacked on a fifteen yards personal foul for helmet to helmet contact when the Vanderbilt player clearly hit the Northwestern player with his shoulder. As usual, if there is any luck involved for Vandy, it's bad luck.
  • Ole Miss got beaten by a 1AA team, Jacksonville State.  Jack Crowe, who once got fired one game into the season at Arkansas, must be just giddy.  Maybe after the game he and Houston Nutt got together and talked about how much they hate Frank Broyles.
  • Joker Phillips picks up his first victory as a head coach in Kentucky's win over Louisville.  That came at the expense of Charlie Strong, who lost his debut.
  • Before you make your travel plans for January Notre Dame fans, it's only one game.  Remember how Charlie Weis fever spread his first year and then pffft.  Beat USC and I'm interested.
  • Not so fast with the rope, Michigan fans.  The Wolverines played their most impressive game under Rich Rod yesterday.  Perhaps this will put Michigan back on the right track.  Then again, let's see how they do against Notre Dame.  Notre Dame vs. Michigan right now is like watching Larry Holmes and George Foreman box each other.  Thirty-five years ago, it would have been awesome to watch.
