White Sox Need Urgent Help Against Twins
It's bad enough that the Chicago White Sox are almost officially out of
the playoffs for 2010, but to watch the Minnesota Twins come in and
sweep them on their own field is a dagger in the heart of just about any
Sox fan.If I were the Sox, my slogan next year would be "The Twinkies Must Die." Seriously. Until the White Sox can find an answer to Minnesota, they are a second place team. And I don't know if there is an answer.
It's almost like that cartoon you used to read in the Highlights Magazine when you were a kid, Goofus and Gallant . "Gallant drives in runners in scoring position, Goofus leaves them on base." "Gallant fields everything hit to him cleanly, Goofus makes errors in critical situations allowing craploads of unearned runs." "Gallant strikes out the oppositions best hitters, Goofus gets his ass lit up by Joe Mauer." 'Nuff said.
This team has speed, we were told. This team is more balanced , we were promised. This team has pitching depth, we were informed. But at the end of the season, it turns out the Twins were far faster, more balanced and had more pitching depth.
The only answer I have is that the White Sox do not play with a sense of urgency. They got off to a slow start and nobody yelled or screamed or threw anything. And maybe that's the problem. The Twins play like every game is an elimination game. The White Sox play like every game is a Sunday pick up game.
Maybe it's not the players that is the problem, but the culture. If that doesn't change, we'll be right back here next year saying the same thing. Wanting to win and winning are two entirely different things. I, for one, am getting tired of promises and Goofus.
