Butkus D. Dogg's Friday Fearless Forecast Week Four
Wow. I'm really struggling so far this year. Last week, I was 6-4 and overall I'm at 15-10. That doesn't breed a lot of confidence, although my college picks have been much better than my pro picks. I'm still in shock that the Bears, Miami and Pittsburgh won last week, but I'll get over it.If I get any worse at this job, they are going to rename me "Dave Wannstedt Dogg." Only Stuttering Dave can take a team that was highly regarded in the pre-season and run it into the ground in three games. His pieces are obviously way out of place this year. For crying out loud, he's so dumb he makes the Fat Dog seem like Einstein.
With any luck, we'll have a breakout week. Five college, five pros, let's go to press:
College
- South Carolina vs. Auburn: This may be Steve Spurrier's best South Carolina team. And you can expect to see a lot of Marcus Lattimore running the ball and controlling the clock for South Carolina. But there are two things I want you to take into consideration: Auburn has a knack for winning close games and Jordan-Hare is a tough place to play. Since this will be a close game, I'm going against convention. Take Auburn.
- Oregon State vs. Boise State: This may be the most important game of the year for Boise State, given how Va. Tech has been exposed as a big fraud. They are awful tough at home on that blue turf and OSU had big problems with the other BCS buster, TCU. Take Boise State.
- West Virginia vs. LSU: If West Virginia thinks they are going into Death Valley on a Saturday night and shock the world, they have another thing coming. Take LSU
- Oregon vs Arizona State: It doesn't make a difference that the Ducks are on the road, this team can flat out score like George Clooney with the ladies. The Dennis Erickson Farewell Tour continues. Take Oregon.
- Alabama vs. Arkansas: I know there's been a lot of hype for this game, #1 vs. great quarterback, but ask yourself this question: If Ryan Mallett is so good, why did he wash out at Michigan? Yeah, okay, so Alabama's defense hasn't quite put it all together this year. But that duo of Ingram and Richardson and Alabama can beat you in a lot of ways and scores a lot of points. No, it won't be like Duke or Penn State, but make no mistake, the Tide will roll. Take Alabama
Pro:
- Detroit vs. Minnesota: Suffices to say, if Brett Favre fumbles this one away, he might as go back to Hillbilly Heaven because his vision quest is done. I think he'll be around for at least one more game. Take Minnesota.
- Atlanta vs. New Orleans: Word on the street is the Falcons are concerned about Matt Ryan's play and that he may have peaked already. That would make things a Brees (get it?) for the Saints. Although the Saints have some issues on defense, I like their ability to force turnovers when they need them the most. Take New Orleans
- Dallas vs, Houston: It's the battle of Texas. Houston was very impressive in their opening win against Indy while the Cowboys are reeling from losses to Washington and (gulp) Da Bears. Right now, the Cowboys can move the ball between the twenties but not in the red zone and their kicking game is awful. Yet, the Cowboys are a mean, angry dog who have been backed into a corner. It is literally win or go home Sunday. Take Dallas.
- San Diego vs. Seattle: This game comes down to turnovers: Seattle has too many and San Diego causes a lot of them. Take San Diego
- Green Bay vs. Chicago: The Bears win over a struggling Cowboys team has given Bears fans a sense of high expectations. The ugly truth is Green Bay is really good and unless the Bears knock all of the Packers offensive weapons out of the game, the Bears secondary is going to have a tough night. In addition, don't expect the Bears offensive line to be as good as they were on Sunday against a pretty good Packer defense. Look for Clay Matthews to introduce himself repeatedly to the Bears backfield. That, and it seems that on Monday night, the Bears seem to always get killed by the Packers. I feel bad for the bald guy. He's going to get beat up at work Tuesday worse than Jay Cutler will get beat up Monday night. Take Green Bay BIG.
