Quickshots: Bears Fans In For A Let Down

  • Call it negativism, call it reality, call it Stockholm syndrome, but I would be shocked if the Bears pulled off an upset tonight.  Green Bay is a pretty good team and the Bears don't exactly do well on Monday nights.  In the Bears favor, the Packers don't have much of a running game and their defense is banged up.  On the down side for the Bears, the Packers passing game is pretty potent and could shred the Bears secondary.  I think Green Bay just has too many weapons for the Bears to stop and is capable of slowing down the Bears offense.  Here's the clincher.  Bears fans set the bar very low this year and coming out 2-0 (and beating an average Dallas team) was enough of a jolt (especially with the dismal baseball season wrapping up) to give them hope.  That hope will be crushed like a marshmallow getting run over by a semi-truck tonight. Make it Packers 38 Bears 20.
  • Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts did a season ending interview.  In it,  he talked about how everyone is disappointed including "the family. " Is this dude Tony Soprano or something?  BTW, the Cubs are about to raise ticket prices again.  It must be nice to play your games in a national historic site where fans from all across the country will come and watch you play no matter how pathetic you are.  However, it seems like the locals are getting smarter.
  • Mark Kotsay makes some excellent points not only about himself but about Ozzie's DH by committee concept.  Kotsay says his slow start killed him and also turned Sox fans against him.  He also said that because there was no one, set, DH, that the position allowed Ozzie the flexibility to keep Paulie and Q healthy while giving other players a chance to play in the field.  Kotsay isn't a bad first baseman and filled in well for Paulie while Andruw Jones was in upgrade in right filling in for Q.  The theory was valid, the problem was the execution as Kotasy and Jones had below average years.  I don't know what his future plans are, but he might want to consider broadcasting or coaching because he obviously gets it.
  • When I hosted a sports talk show in Nashville and Dave Wannstedt was coach of the Bears, I would rip Dave every chance I got calling him a "fraud."  There was a caller who attended the U (and may have played football there) that called me all the time and blasted me, telling me I didn't know what I was talking about.  I hope Miami John" reads this .  Stuttering Dave is every bit the fraud he was fourteen years ago.
  • I'll be glad when the season is over and the Ozzie-Kenny soap opera packs it's trunk until February.  Ozzie will be back.  Kenny will be back.  It's up to you Mr. Chairman to straighten your boys out.  And, if you are just a causal White Sox fan, know this: Ozzie has much a chance of managing the Cubs next year as I do of having Shania Twain return any of my phone calls.
  • Despite a less than impressive performance Saturday against Arkansas, Alabama remains #1 in both polls as well they should.  The game should be a wakeup call for Alabama who needs to understand you just can't step on the field and win and not everyone you play is going to be Duke.  The good news for Bama fans is that  Coach Nick Satan Saban will have a lot of film to point out flaws in their game and they should build on the last minute win at Arkansas.   If the Tide can beat Florida Saturday night, they could run the table.  I think the only team standing in between them and another SEC Championship Game appearance is Auburn.  Yes, I said Auburn.
  • If I were a betting man, I would put my money on Mark Richt being shown the door after the season at Georgia.  It's not only the 0-3 conference start (including Saturday's loss to Mississippi State), it's the ten arrests that have occurred recently.  The program is struggling both on and off the field and I wouldn't be a bit surprise if Georgia wanted to go in the proverbial "new direction."
