Fire Ozzie and Kenny? Bitter White Sox Fan Dosen't Get It
I know this season hasn't been easy for Chicago White Sox fans. Between the inconsistency of the team and the soap opera off the field, it is easy to be frustrated. But that doesn't mean that the Sox need to scrap everything and rebuild from the bottom up.I read some comments from a frustrated Sox fan who is calling for what I term "radical rebuilding." He believes it's time to let Ozzie Guillen and Kenny Williams go. Here's what he has to say about Ozzie:
Ozzie has to go because his team always fall apart in the second half. 2006 strikes me as very disappointing. That team was better than the Tigers and the Twins. There was no excuse for them to not get a chance to repeat that season. This is on Ozzie. In the last few years, the White Sox have fallen short on the Twins. They are better than the Twins when you compare rosters on paper. How is it Ozzie is not getting it done? Also, Ozzie kissing the Twins' tuchis should be unacceptable. You see any team's manager doing the same stunt with other teams? You think Tony La Russa or Dusty Baker or Ron Gardenhire or Terry Bevington would act like that. Gardenhire hates the White Sox, and you can tell by the way his team play the White Sox. That's how Ozzie has to approach the White Sox, but that's not in him. That itself is why he has to go.
Let's examine and debate:
- There are two reasons for this year's second half failure: Injuries and lack of depth. Injuries to Jake Peavy, Gordon Beckham, Carlos Quentin, Paul Konerko, etc. took their toll in August. The Sox, unfortunately, do not have the depth to back these up in their farm system and couldn't pull the trigger on a trade to compensate. Neither of these issues should be laid at the feet of Ozzie Guillen.
- Ozzie respects the Twins. He should. They are very good. I didn't realize that Ron Gardenhire hated the White Sox. The Twins way is based not on emotion, but on execution. If the Twins win, it's because they execute. And if they lose, it's because there has been a breakdown somewhere. Gardy will rip his team a new one if they show up and under perform, but he will never call out an opponent. You have faulty intel there, my friend.
- The only times the name Ozzie Guilen and Terry Bevington should be mentioned in the same paragraph is never. How old were you exactly when Bevington was running the Sox, 10? Bevington was an ass clown of the highest order.
- What kind of paper are you looking at to compare the Sox and Twins? Or, using for rolling papers? The only two positions where the Sox are better than the Twins (on paper) is shortstop and center field. I would consider first base a draw. True, the Sox have better pitching and a little bit better bullpen.
- You need to stop thinking of the Twins as this destitute team of rebels and accept them for what they are: A great organization who has drafted smartly, made some solid trades and has developed most their own players.
Kenny has to go because what exactly has he done a general manager. Sure he makes deals, but it hasn't work. There is not a good chemistry mix on that team.
My thoughts:
- The deals haven't worked? Which deals? I'm with you on Teahen. Edwin Jackson has some upside. Peavy was a good deal until he got hurt. The Thome trade was good. Theoretically, the Swisher trade was good, he just didn't perform well for the Sox. He's been great with the Yankees. How about picking up Omar? Or the deal for Quentin? Or Juan Pierre? Or the John Danks deal (gee, what ever happened to Brandon McCarthy?) How about taking Bobby Jenks off the scrap heap? Or signing Tad Iguchi? Or the Podsednik deal in 2004? Or picking up Geoff Blum? Or signing Alexi Ramirez? I'd go on, but I believe a sane person would admit I made my point.
- Kenny has the guts to make trades and shake things up, probably more so than just about any GM in baseball. That alone wins him points in my book.
- No chemistry on the White Sox? Again, what are you smoking?
- Kenny is accountable for the sad state of the Sox farm system. However, he is making strides to improve it. A couple of years ago, he reorganized the scouting department and it's paid off with two excellent first round choices: Gordon Beckham and Chris Sale. There are also some youngsters who will play next year like Brent Morel. The Sox need to continue to develop players and draft well at a level comparable to the early nineties when they drafted and developed several outstanding players including Frank Thomas, Robin Ventura, Alex Fernandez, Jack McDowell et. al.
The White Sox are better off either hiring La Russa or Terry Bevington as managers. You will get results in either of them. Just maybe Chicago can beat the Twins, and finally winning the division. As for general maanger, promote Rick Hahn or hire Ron Schueler.
That's some primo crack you have there, pal.
- If you really want Bevington back, you are one step away from rehab and maybe you should go. Bevington was an awful manager. Anyone who tries to bring in a pitcher from the bullpen when there isn't one warming up gets no votes in my book. I've got a better idea: Let's make Tim Floyd coach of the Bulls, bring back Alpo to coach the Hawks and pry Stuttering Dave away from Pitt to coach the Bears again. Because all three of them are just like hiring Bevington again. I'd consider digging up the rotting corpse of Don Gutteridge before I ever put Bevington back in silver and black.
- As for LaRussa, he's in his late sixties, tired and grumpy. in other words, Lou Piniella with more wins. Besides, I've never forgiven him for his piss poor managing in the 1983 ALCS (especially game 4). You'd agree with me except you probably weren't born yet.
- If you don't like Kenny, why would you want his strong right arm? Why not clean house? As for Schueler, he's semi-retired and enjoying it.
- Based on your suggestion, the way to improve the White Sox is to fire a respected GM and a respected manager and replace them with their mentor, their assistant, a man who is at the very end of his career or a man who is incompetent. Here's some advice: Become a Cub fan, because that's what they do.
