Only Super Effort Will Make Jay A Hero

I heard an interesting discussion yesterday afternoon on "The Score."  The topic was about what it would take for Bears fans to embrace Jay Cutler as their quarterback.  Yet, during this entire discussion, there was no mention of Rex Grossman.

Jay and Rex are far more similar than you think.  Oh, Cutler is a better quarterback, no doubt about it, but both have a lot of the same tendencies.  Both had days where they looked unbeatable and other days where they looked like they weren't good enough to play for an arena team.

Rex's biggest moment was when he crapped the bed in Miami.  That putrid performance in the Super Bowl was enough for fans to lose all confidence in him and attach their hopes and dreams to the next big thing-Kyle Orton.  And while Orton wasn't a QB that was going to take you to the Super Bowl, there was none of the stupid mistakes made by his predecessor.  There also weren't as many wins.

Enter Cutler.  Before he had even played a down in a Bears uniform, he was being hailed as the best Bears quarterback since Sid Luckman.

With expectations high, the Bears were awful last year.  This year has been golden, but there have been times where Cutler has cost the Bears some points and perhaps some games.  Winning tomorrow is huge for him and winning a Super Bowl makes him a Chicago hero.

It's not the prickly personality that has fans doubting Cutler.  It's his body of work.  And sooner or later, Jay Cutler will turn into a quarterback that people will compare with one of these two: Brett Favre or Rex Grossman.  One is a hall of famer, the other a fraud. And while comparing anything Chicago to Favre is not cool, the fact was very much like Cutler, great arm, can escape if needed, gunslinger mentality.

If Jay Cutler wants to become a Chicago hero, he needs to embrace his inner Favre.  And if he does lead the Bears to a win tomorrow and two weeks from tomorrow, he'll be the most popular quarterback in Chicago since Jim McMahon.
