Quick Shots: It's Too Early To Talk Dynasty
- The Packers win one Super Bowl and have been anointed champions for life by eager, enabling national sportswriters? Why? They are a good bunch. But with winning comes pressure and demands for more money. Guys like Nick Barnett who cause internal flaps over being included in a picture, etc. Look, winning multiple Super Bowls isn't easy. Ask Peyton Manning. Or Mike Ditka. There is no guarantee these guys will be back next year. They didn't even win the conference this year. This is not a great football team, it's just above average. Let's see what happens down the road rather than just assume, shall we?
- It just seems that every year, whoever wins the Super Bowl is annointed champion for life. Remember the Saints buzz last year? In 2006, when the Bears made it to Super Bowl IXI, Lovie Smith was a genius and Jerry Angelo a guru. The Bears defense was expected to keep them in contention for seasons to come. But injuries and Rex Grossman and the trade of Thomas Jones sent the Bears to back of the line. Now, most Bears fans would drive either, if not both, to the nearest airport. Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson are good guys and smart men, but nothing lasts forever. Let's see what the next couple of seasons bring before we enshrine either one in Canton.
- The best part of Aaron Rodgers Super Bowl performance is that we are finally over Brett Favre. The bad part? The man crush on Rodgers is far worse. Unfortunately, Rodgers is a lot harder to hate than Favre was.
- Mike Munchak, the new head coach of the Tennessee Titans has been with the organization for 30 years and is taking over for a man he either played under or worked for in seventeen of those years. During his coronation yesterday, he said, "I've been here. I know what we're doing well and what we need to
change. I promise I'll do what it takes to get us back on the
winning track." I wonder if we'll find out some day that Munchak stuck a dagger in Fisher to get the job so he could enact
Bud Adamshis changes. Just sayin' - If you are a Green Bay Packer fan, DO NOT click this link. If you are a Bears fan, click on it and tell all your friends.
- The Chicago Blackhawks have me concerned. I haven't seen them play much this year, but when they have they look like they are sleepwalking. The are 11th in the Western Conference right now and three points out of a playoff slot. They lost two points last night to a team, Calgary, that they had to beat. Calgary was so bad earlier this year, they fired their GM. It would be truly disappointing if the Hawks didn't at least get to defend the cup, but all of those salary cap trades Stan Bowman had to make really are biting them right now.
- White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy will talk to reporters today about his progress. Don't expect anything earth shattering here. In fact, expect the cliche meter to start smoking.
- MSNBC's early morning show, First Look, continues to tease the NBA first when they go to break prior to their sports segment. You'd think continued Super Bowl activity, college basketball or even the NHL would once in a while be on the list. Their new owners, Comcast, own a hockey team for crying out loud. Please fix this. Not everyone gives a crap about the NBA.
