Quickshots: Tito Steps In
- You know it's spring training when the media starts baiting people into saying stupid things. Case in point: The current war of words between former White Sox closer Bobby Jenks and White Sox skipper Ozzie Guillen. Jenks was prodded by the media to say some not so flattering things about the White Sox which of course prompted an equally as inane response from White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. Fortunately, Red Sox manager Terry Francona stepped in and told Jenks to STFU and worry about his new gig with the Red Sox.
- I see Bobby vs. Ozzie from both sides, but mostly from the White Sox side. The Sox bent over backwards to help Jenks through a rough stretch in his personal life last year and yet Jenks continues to bite the hand that once fed him. I think Jenks is hurt he is no longer a part of the White Sox and is trying to fire himself up with all the trash talk. When Jenks says things like the White Sox made a last minute offer which was probably to appease their fans, you know he's full of crap. After last year, most White Sox fans would have gladly driven Jenks to the airport.
- I appreciate what Bobby Jenks did as the White Sox closer, but it was clearly time for everyone to move on. Jenks came to the White Sox with more baggage than Anne Hathaway's costume designer and for a long time it didn't manifest itself. Last year, it did and while his efforts in 2005 and 2006 will always be the stuff of legends, it was time for him to go.
- While I don't mind Adam Dunn in the three hole, I would prefer that Ozzie bat Dunn cleanup to go righty, lefty, righty with Paul Konerko and Alex Rios. Ozzie isn't a big righty, lefty, righty guy.
- I heard Jake Peavy's interview on the Score yesterday and if he's sincere about being honest with the trainers and coaches this time around, he might have a pretty good year. When you listen to him talk, you understand how competitive and dedicated the guy is to not only wanting to be one of the best in the game, but winning and doing anything he can to help his team. Maybe the Bears could arrange for Jay Cutler to shadow him for a while.
- RARE BULLS COMMENT: I know the Bulls are supposed to be pretty good, but as a casual outsider, I can't help but wonder why if they can knock off the Spurs and Heat why can't do better against stiff like Toronto and Charlotte. Consistency is what makes a winning team, isn't it?
- Don't look now, but here come the Blackhawks. Maybe now that he's got a new contract, Brent Seabrook will play better and if Stan Bowman can swing a train for some wide body to clog the crease on the offensive side, the Hawks will be back in the race. All you have to do in the NHL is make it to the dance and then anything goes.
- Lovie Smith seems a little cockier now that he's been extended through 2013. I wouldn't have extended him, but some of my friends that cover the sport tell me he would have lost the locker room if he didn't get it. I don't think that at all. I think the Bears were afraid that he would leave after 2011 if he wasn't re-signed and they were more interested in continuity. Lovie is a good coach, not a great one and I am not convinced he can lead you to the promised land and bring home the bling.
- I haven't mentioned anything about the suicide of Dave Duerson because I wanted to get a little more information. Basically, it came down to Duerson was depressed about his financial empire crumbling and his physical problems caused by getting hit in the head playing football. I honestly believe that the money part was something he was okay with, but the thing about losing his memory, headaches, etc. was too much for him to take. Duerson was a smart guy and if you take away the ability of a smart guy to use his brain, he is left with very little. Duerson obviously wanted to get out before it got worse. While I don't condone his actions, I totally get why he did it.
- If Willie, Mickey and the Duke had a tontine , Willie should be hearing from the lawyers right about now.
