Quick Shots: Make Or Break For Jake

  • Jake Peavy takes to the hill today to test his lat under game conditions.  I'm not surehow many pitches he will be throwing, but I am assuming around forty.  He will mostly throw fastballs. Now, even if I am non-roster invitee and I know a fastball is coming, I'm going to tee-off, especially on a guy who probably isn't going to be getting it up to the plate more than 80-85mph.  The key here is that he hits his spots and feels good tomorrow.  This game is on MLB network starting at 2.
  • Don't expect the Sox starter's hitless streak to continue with Peavy on the mound.  But you have to admit the other four guys have looked sharp so far.  That's a good sign.
  • It's also a good sign that the bats started working yesterday,  The Big Donkey got his first base knock yesterday and even Tyler Flowers got a big hit. No word on his defense yet.
  • The NFL has extended the deadline for the CBA until midnight tonight.  Despite the continued pessimism, that's actually a good sign. I agree with everyone says that all of this arguing between guys who make millions is a big turn off to the fan base.  That doesn't mean people won't come back to it like sheep after it's over, because they will, even if some of the regular season gets wiped out.
  • How can anyone take the Bulls seriously when they continue to be the most inconsistent team in the league?  Sure, they beat San Antonio and Miami, but losing a seventeen point lead against Atlanta is not the stuff deep playoff runs are made of.
  • Speaking of playoff runs, how about them Blackhawks?
  • Based on his defense of an article in Sports Illustrated, it appears Stuttering Dave's dismissal at Pitt may have had more to do with his control of the players and not his inability to win the big games.  22 Pitt players had criminal charges brought against them.  Of course, having worked for Jimmy Johnson with both Miami and the Cowboys, Dave probably thought it was normal.
  • BYU showed some real guts kicking Brandon Davies off the team for violating the BYU honor code (thou shalt not get laid.) It does show a rare school not afraid to treat an athlete like everyone else, which is refreshing.
  • Former Bears DT Tommie Harris showed a lot of class buying a full page newspaper ad to thank fans for their support during his seven years in Chicago, especially since most of those fans would have driven him to the airport.
  • The Packers are reportedly shopping linebacker Nick Barnett.  Thank goodness the Bears have enough linebackers.
  • New Cubs manager Mike Quade has the Cubs practicing everything this spring training, including their annual dugout fight at U.S. Comiskey Park.
