Quick Shots: Peavy, Sharp And Other Assorted Owies

  • I'm not too terribly upset about the current state of Chicago White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy.  I don't think anyone expected him to contribute until at least May.  And everyone wants him to be as close to 100% as possible down the stretch.  Theoretically, he could be fresher down the stretch if his season is shorter.  And until then, I'm sure Jeff Marquez or Phil Humber could keep the Sox in a few games until Jake is ready.
  • As far as all of the hub bub about Peavy pitching with the flu and Ozzie getting annoyed that Peavy is experiencing some tendinitis, I think it's much ado about nothing.  And if Ozzie is smart (which he is) he shuts up now about it so as not to lose Peavy's respect.  The fact that Peavy went out there with the flu is not a big deal.  The fact he threw 83 pitches is more on Ozzie then it is on Peavy, but whatever.  Look, Jake Peavy is a great example of an old school, I'm not going to miss work if I don't have to type.  I love the guy's tenacity.  I just hope he'll stay in one piece long enough to pitch like a Cy Young winner and help the Sox to the playoffs.  And yes, i admit being tough and careless are not mutually exclusive.
  • Patrick Sharp's injury is probably the final nail that seals the Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup repeat coffin shut.  You need to score in the playoffs and without Sharp, the Hawks arsenal is greatly reduced. They also have some other injuries that are draining their energy.  If they make the playoffs, they will probably be a sixth or seventh seed which means catching Vancouver or San Jose in the first round.  Sure, anything can happen, but it's hard to win when you pull a knife and everyone else pulls a gun.
  • Okay, I admit it.  I've been watching the Bulls a little bit lately.  Even I enjoy watching D. Rose play.
  • The resolution of the Bruce Pearl situation at Tennessee is sad, but Bruce Pearl needs to take a long, hard look in a mirror.  Here's a guy who committed a cardinal coaching sin (turning in a competitor on a recruiting violation), got blackballed at the D1 level, worked nine years at the D-II level, got back to D1 at the mid-major level and then made it back to the top of the charts in the SEC.  Pearl pissed it all away by lying to the NCAA and then committing more violations AFTER the first ones were discovered.  Next stop for Bruce?  Either TV or a second chair in the NBA.  Of course, he might come back in a few years, but I doubt any big name team would want anything to do with him.  Of course, they said that about Tim Floyd after USC.
  • One thing about Pearl that you may or may not know: He was very connected to the community in Knoxville, helping to raise thousands of dollars for charity in the community.  He'll probably be missed there ever more than he will as UT's basketball coach.
  • One other Pearl note: I think if UT was smart, they'd fire AD Mike Hamilton as a co-conspirator/enabler and hire Phillip Fulmer to be AD.  Fulmer at least has integrity.  Hamilton is a snake oil salesman.  I doubt this will happen though.
  • The NFL Labor situation drags on with no resolution in sight.  Can't we all just get along?
  • Full disclosure: We are in the process of relocating world headquarters, so, for the next couple of weeks, the posts may even be more sporadic than they have been the past month.  Once we are settled in, there will be a crapload more posts as I will have access to all my weapons all the time.  Without going into a sad, personal story, I am going through a very mentally draining time right now which is taking most of my  focus (don't worry, marriage and work are fine.) It's hard to have the clarity to write when you are focused on other things that are more important.  I just wanted you to know why the posts have been somewhat inconsistent.  But come mid-April, you can expect more.
