Quick Shots: Six Is Enough

  • The Chicago White Sox choose to jettison pitcher Jeff Marquez in favor of outfielders Brent Lillibridge and Lastings Milledge.  It's an interesting choice going with eleven and not twelve pitchers and it makes you wonder where the next move is.  Lillibridge was kept because he's out of options, he's the fastest guy on the team and he plays multiple positions.  Milledge was kept because he's been ripping the cover off the ball and he's a serviceable replacement in the corner outfield spots.  Now, the big question is what happens when Jake Peavy comes back?  Phil Humber will be the fifth starter while Peavy continues to rehab in Arizona, but you are going to need him as a backup for Peavy if Jake gets rocked and the Sox need a long guy.  Chances are, Milledge will be the odd man out at that point. Or is Millage just keeping the seat warm for the Cuban Sandwich? But he, unlike Lillibridge, does have an option left, so the Sox can send him down and not lose him on waivers.  This was a very interesting decision made by the Sox, especially in regard to Marquez who most observes thought was going to make the big club.
  • I have to give the Cubs ownership kudos for handing the Carlos Silva situation the right way.  Dude gets cut, dude pops off, dude gets released.  Carlos Silva certainly handled the situation the wrong way and it may be a while before a team wants to sign him.  He may wind up pitching outside of the country or in an indy league because of the damage that he, himself has caused to his reputation. Meanwhile, the Cubs will pay him over $11 million this season to sit on his large buttocks and do nothing. It makes you Silva popped off to get released on purpose. If he did, this will be his last big payday.
  • The Blackhawks stubbed their toe again the other night against San Jose and it doesn't get any easier tonight in Detroit.  The Red Wings would love nothing more than to knock the Hawks out of playoff contention.
  • How about the wacky NCAA Tournament?  If you had both Butler and VCU in the final four, you are either a genius, a liar or should be boarding a plane for Vegas.
  • Don't look now, but the Milwaukee Brewers are quietly gathering parts for a playoff run.
  • As I mentioned we're moving and part of the deal is we get AT&T U-Verse provided by the complex we are moving to.  So, I finally get the NFL Network (Time Warner doesn't carry it) but I lose the MLB Network, the NHL Network and U-Verse doesn't offer the MLB Extra Innings Package.  Sucks a lot to be me.
