Quick Shots: So Far, So Okay For White Sox
- Looking at it criticly, the White Sox first nine games have been good, but they could have been better. The loss Friday night was especially upsetting, given how bad Tampa is and the fact the Sox blew a five run lead in the top of the ninth. If that can happen against Tampa, what will happen against Minnesota?
- The offense has been great, especially when you consider that the big thumper, Adam Dunn is out. The good news is, this team has shown that they can win without him in the lineup which will only go to bolster their confidence as the season wears on.
- Juan Pierre and Gordon Beckham have become a force at the top of the lineup. They have been setting the table for the middle of the order which has been a lot better generating hits with runners in scoring position. If they keep it up, this offense will be hard to stop.
- The pitching is starting to come around. Edwin Jackson dominated Thursday night, while John Danks should have got a win instead of an ND Friday. Even swingman Phil Humber contributed a win.
PinkGavin Floyd's eight inning effort yesterday gave the bullpen a well deserved day off. - If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times, Matt Thornton is not a closer. I just wish someone would hear me.
- The Blackhawks back into the playoffs, but given their first round opponent is Vancouver, that's okay. As good as the Canucks have been this season, the Hawks are in their heads and could easily pull a first round upset. I don't think the Hawks have the juice to win a second consecutive Stanley Cup, but stranger things have happened.
- Their is an interesting phenomenon going on in Chicago. While the Blackhawks are in the playoffs and are the defending Stanley Cup champions, the momentum has clearly shifted back to the Bulls and basketball. This is especially true on sports talk radio where the hosts are far more familiar with basketball then they are with hockey. Last year's cup run by the Hawks is like the 2005 White Sox, it was nice, but if it's not the Bulls, Bears or Cubs, the passion subsides almost immediately as the bandwagon jumpers disembark looking for another bandwagon to hop on to. As both a passionate White Sox and Hawks fan, I find this behavior disconcerting.
- Saying that Jenn Sterger is not a gold digger is like saying I have a full head of hair: It just isn't true. If she really wanted this thing to go away, she'd put a muzzle on her manager Phil Reese who is telling her story to the New York Post (probably for profit.) She would also not make TV appearances and play victim. You can't throw a flag on a penalty that happened three years ago and expect people to feel sorry for you.
- Memo to the President: If you want to save the economy, let loose the national oil reserves. The high gas prices are raising prices for basic goods and services which are absolutely killing people. This could be the worst recession since Ford and Carter if you don't do something NOW. And, it would be nice if shows like "Meet the Press" would mention this rather than giving large chunks of time to people like Mike Pence who is more concerned with playing God then he is serving the public.
- We're still in the process of sifting through boxes at our relocated World Headquarters, so it will probably be another week until we have the time and energy for regular posts. We'll continue to post when we can, so just hang with us.
