Quick Shots: White Sox "All In"---A Slump

  • Today's oxymoron: Chicago White Sox offense.  'Nuff said.
  • The first guy to call in the post game show yesterday decided that the problem with the White Sox is Ozzie Gullen and that the team "no longer listens to him."  Obviously, this guy either doesn't know anything about baseball or is a Cub fan (which amounts to the same thing.)  Ozzie hit the nail on the head yesterday when he pointed out that unlike other team sports, in baseball, you send the players out and they play.  You can't send in plays (sure, you can bunt, hit and run whatever, but not on every play) and you can't substitute freely.  This slump isn't Ozzie's fault and it's not Greg Walker's fault.  They can only encourage the players.  The players have to get this done themselves.
  • And to you other yahoos who demand that this guy get traded or why in the heck did they let Bobby Jenks go or Ozzie should be fired or Kenny should be fired or whatever, get over yourselves.  It's April 25th for crying out loud.  This is a 162 game season, not a sixteen game season.  Do you really think Cleveland will be on top of the division in August?  Do you really think the Twinkies will be in fourth place?  Relax, take a breath and enjoy the NHL and NBA playoffs and rejoin the rest of us in late May.
  • This season is becoming a mirror image of last season where the Sox didn't get it together until late June.  Thanks to getting swept in Detroit, the Sox are now 3-6 against divisional opponents.  That has to change if they want to make the post season.
  •  I'm not as concerned about Alex Rios' offense as I am about his defense.  Lately it seems his throws have been off and he's not positioning himself well on fly balls.  Given he is flanked by two below average outfielders, the Sox need him to turn it up a notch or two with the glove.
  • John Danks should be really mad at his teammates.  Instead, he's handled the lack of run support that he has received with a positive attitude.  Please sign this guy to a long term contract.
  • Are you kidding me?  The Blackhawks are still alive?  If the Hawks win tomorrow night, the Canucks can point the finger at Raffi Torres for awaking a slumbering giant and at Roberto Luongo, who just can't seem to finish.
  • Bulls fans who are weeping and wailing and gnashing their teeth should look no further than the Blackhawks as an example of a team that is an 8th seed but playing hard.  Did they think the Pacers were just going to show up and roll over?  All of this "Bulls not playing like a number one seed" stuff is crap, the playoffs are tough for everybody.  As long as Derek Rose's ankle is okay, the Bulls will be two.  It might behoove them to end it earlier rather than late to give Rose some rest.
  • Carl Crawford picked the wrong town to hit .154 in.  While toiling in the anonymity of Tampa, a slow start is fine.  Under the bright lights and big stage of Boston, it's going to give him an ulcer.  Fortunately, the Red Sox have won five straight, so Crawford is spared being tossed under the bus for now, except on sports talk radio.
  • Don't look now, but the Milwaukee Brewers are proving they can swim with the Cardinals and Reds.  They can go a long way to showing it tonight as they open a three game series with Cincinnati at Miller Park in Milwaukee.
  • Memo to Bears GM Jerry Angelo: Please draft an offensive lineman.  A mean, nasty one.  One named Carimi.  Thanks.  I'll hang up and listen.
  • Congratulations to the Nashville Predators (and their great fans) for advancing for the first time in team history in the Stanley Cup playoffs.  I'm happiest for their coach Barry Trotz, who does more with less than any other coach in the NHL.  And for my friends, team broadcasters Pete Weber and Terry Crisp who have been waiting for this day since 1998.
