Quick Shots: Rancid Road Trip Could Cause Spring Cleaning

  • The Chicago White Sox hit the road for a nine game swing beginning tonight in Seattle.  If the Sox continue to struggle, the house cleaning will begin.  I am not trying to sound like one of those alarmists I read on the chat boards, but if they go, say 2-7, Kenny Williams will have no choice but to make changes.
  • The only thing about this team that seems odd is that they play without any emotion.  Last year, I saw a "dawn of the dead" analogy.  Maybe the return of Jake Peavy next week will light a fire under them.  Of course, Peavy would have to throw a shutout for these guys to win for him, at least right now.
  • Good news/bad news dept.  The good news is Gus Johnson may be out at CBS.  Better news, Brad Nessler got hired by the NFL Network, not Gus.  Bad news, Gus may still get a gig with Fox.  I think ESPN should hire him and pair him with Stuart Scott.
  • Why is everyone making such a big deal about Dick Stockton saying "David Rose" instead of Derrick Rose?  My god, like you've never made a mistake at work before.  Stockton's game has decreased a little in recent years, but he's still a respected announcer.
  • Speaking of the Bulls, game three looms big tonight in Atlanta.  Time for the big beat down.
  • Rashard Mendenhall is going to wind up in the Canadian Football League if he's not careful.  Better to keep your Twitter shut and be thought a fool than to Tweet and remove all doubt.
  • Gary Williams sudden departure at Maryland raises some red flags.  Did he decide it was time or was he visited by the ghost of Maryland Basketball future who reminded him another season out of the money would be cause for dismissal.  I think the AD there is a bit of a buffoon and even if he and Williams get along, Williams wanted to, as my old pal Sonny Smith used to say "get out of town before the parade."
  • Finally, I cannot believe some of the things I have been reading about the recent taking of Osama Bin Laden.  There are people in this country that thought the Navy Seals who stormed the compound acted too hastily in taking him out.  Some have actually called it an execution.  Here is the reality: The son of a bitch killed thousands of our citizens.  He lived in a heavily fortified compound and had all kinds of weapons lying around.  Yelling "FREEZE.  PUT YOUR HANDS UP!" doesn't necessarily cut it with this guy.  As soon as they saw him retreat, they took him out, as per military protocol.  If you are an American and you feel any kind of remorse for killing this guy, you should consider moving to Canada, Mexico or Pakistan.  You can be reflective or joyful, that is completely up to you, but the man made his own bed, now he is lying in it .  There was no other ending and they know this going in.
