Dear Ozzie, We Love You, Now Shut Up
Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen is at it again, this time directing one of his rants toward Sox fans. Think of it as Lee Elia on Valium.
Here's an open letter to the frustrated Sox skipper:
Dear Ozzie:
We Sox fans know why you are frustrated and we share your pain. Your team can't hit, can barely play defense and can only pitch consistently every fifth or sixth day. So, yeah we get why you are a little beside yourself. That said, please don't blame us.
Every year since you won the world series in 2005, the Sox organization has rolled out a new team claiming bigger and better than before. In 2006, you traded for Jim Thome, who although a great player, couldn't replace the defense Aaron Rowand supplied in center field. Then it was on to Nick Swisher a couple of years later, a player who spent more time pouting than hitting only to blossom after he was traded away. How about Orlando Cabrera who spent a year playing a slick shortstop but left because he didn't fit in? Or Alex Rios who is showing us why Toronto let him go without a fight. Or any of the many young pitchers Kenny traded away for what turned out to be a handful of magic beans?
How about all the youngsters that didn't turn out like Josh Fields, Brian Anderson and Chris Getz? How about all of the free agents that haven't lived up to their billing like Juan Pierre? Is that our fault too, Ozzie? The only reason we get on them is because they are killing us.
The point is, Ozzie, you guys set the bar. Every year you set our expectations higher (like this year with Adam Dunn) and you guys fail to measure up to it. Either you get off to a slow start or the hitting fails or your big free agent tanks. That doesn't have anything to do with Ozzie and probably not a whole lot to do with you, but we certainly are not to be blamed.
Truthfully, you say no one has more passion than you do. Well, that may not be totally true. You try being a White Sox fan for forty plus years. Chicago is a Cubs town, a Bears town, a Bulls town followed by the Blackhawks and White Sox. I admit, it's not as bad as being a Fire fan, but it does have it's moments. And each of us who has loyally come back year after year deserves some credit, not a lecture.
Sure, there are know it callers who call the Ranger and make ludicrous suggestions, but that's not all of us. Most of it know it is what it is, you guys can't hit in the clutch and you can't play defense. And until the changes, our dreams of winning another championship are slim and none with slim just leaving town.
Ozzie, we love your rants, but save it for the team not us. We don't deserve it.
