Quick Shots: Jake Is The Man
- I had a rare opportunity to watch the Chicago White Sox on TV last night, thanks to Milwaukee and Cincinnati being blacked out in my market and the Sox being the backup game. I had even better fortune to get a game where Jake Peavy was pitching. No, he wasn't dominant, but for seven innings, the man just kept going after it, doing whatever needed to be done to win. This was his fourth start back from his surgery and you've got to think how his guts and determination trickles down to his teammates. No matter how this season turns out for the White Sox, Peavy's story will be a high point.
- Speaking of the White Sox, they finally took advantage of a pitcher having a bad night, breaking the game open with a four run sixth against Jon Lester. Lester, who had been riding a seven game winning streak was as flat as a pancake last night and the White Sox made him pay. I'd sure like to see a few more of those kinds of games.
- The White Sox scored seven runs last night without the help of Adam Dunn who was riding the pine against the lefty Lester. It will be interesting to see if Ozzie goes with the same lineup tonight or re-inserts the struggling Dunn. Dunn is a decent guy and you hope he breaks out of it soon, not only for the sake of the team but his own mental health.
- I had a tough time last night rooting against Carl Crawford, but I managed. On the other hand, I find it easy to root against Bobby Jenks who will come off the DL today and be active for Boston. Maybe Adam Dunn will come out of it against him tonight and send a fastball to Roxbury.
- Ozzie Guillen soft soaped his shots at fans he made the other day saying he was taken out of context. With Ozzie, there is always way too much context.
- Now former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressell may have some kind of multiple personality disorder. How esle do you explain a coach who thumps the bible in the morning and then makes illicit deals in the afternoon. Perhaps Jimmy Swaggart needs a wing man.
- Sunday was about as exciting a day of racing as I can ever remember and if you watched the Indy 500 or the Coca Cola 600 (or both as I did) you saw two guys blow it in the last turn. J.R. Hildebrand had the Indy 500 won until he crashed into the wall in turn four, while poor Junior ran out of fuel in the last turn in Charlotte. It breaks your heart to see this unless you are Dan Weldon or Kevin Harvick.
- The NHL has now failed in Atlanta twice and has already failed in Winnipeg, they will announce today that the Atlanta Thrashers will be moving to Winnipeg. This is so NHL.
- Speaking of the NHL, the Stanley Cup finals begin tomorrow night. I am pulling for Boston, simply because I think the Canucks are a bunch of whining pussies. I probably will not invest any time in watching on TV. Nor will I spend a second watching the NBA Finals.
- From a local perspective, with Ohio State's football program sure to get a big haircut from the NCAA, Michigan digging out from the Rich Rod era and most of the other league teams (save for Iowa) being rather pedestrian, a huge opportunity has arisen for the Wisconsin football program. If Bret Bielema can't make hay while sun shines, the Wisconsin brass, led by AD and former coach Barry Alvarez may have to shift directions. I'm not saying Bielema can't do it, I'm just saying that there will be swift consequences if he can't.
