Quick Shots: Peavy Injury May Be End For White Sox

  • Jake Peavy's upcoming stint on the DL may be the fork in the 2011 White Sox.  Unless Adam Dunn, Alex Rios and John Danks snap out of it this week, the Sox look like a team that may win 80 games and finish a distant third.  I haven't given up yet, but I have to admit I was very discouraged watching the two games over the weekend against Detroit. Will Ohman is the leading candidate for the Mike MacUseless memorial incompetence award.  And memo to Jesse Crain: When you have two strikes on Miguel Cabrera with two outs, don't throw him a pitch I could have hit out of the park.
  • I'd really like to see this White Sox team firing on all cylinders.  So far, they've run like a '77 Vega.
  • I love all these people calling in the talk shows blaming the Sox coaches for the teams failure to be more successful this year.  You don't think Greg Walker wouldn't spend hours watching tape with Adam Dunn?  Or that Don Cooper really encourages Jesse Crain to throw a fat one in the top of the ninth of a critical game.  ONLY PLAYERS CAN EXECUTE.  A bad manager makes bad decisions.  A bad coach has players who fail year after year.  This is not the case for the Sox coaching staff.  It's clearly up to the players.
  • It looks like both teams who knocked off the Chicago teams in the NHL and NBA playoffs are poised to win championships.
  • I read carefully what Carlos Zambrano said after the game yesterday, and unlike his other crazy rumblings, the guy makes sense this time.  The Cubs have half a triple A team out there with a manager who has mostly triple A experience.   I think Big Z realizes that the Cubs, as they are now, have no shot to win anything now or in the future and I think he knows his clock is ticking and that he would like to win. I don't think his comments were that out of line.  Maybe unfair to his teammates, but honest.  Cub fans probably will even support him this time for saying the the Emperor is naked.
  • The Tigers may not be the best team in the league, but they sure know how to smell blood in the water.  The great Cleveland fade is underway and the White Sox better get there before Detroit, not Cleveland runs away and hides.
  • What will happen first: The Cubs winning a world series or Junior Earnhardt winning a Sprint Cup race.  He's been hampered by fuel issues the last two weeks even though he's had one of the best cars on the track.
  • Don't you love how an ESPN investigation implicates Mel Kiper Jr.?  You'd think the WWL would have a handle on that.
  • The NFL has absolutely no sympathy from fans right now as billionaires battle millionaires for massive amounts of money.  The problem on the owners side is that there a group of pretty hard core owners including Jerry Richardson and Jerry Jones.  It's like the 1994 baseball lockout led by our now loveable Chairman.  Bottom line is, some of the other owners need to show some cajones and and stand up to these guys or there may not be a pro season.  The biggest beneficiary is any network with college football.
