25th Man Could Be White Sox MVP
How about that Brent Lillibridge? When the guy isn't out homering Adam Dunn, he's making spectacular outfield catches, like the one he made last night in the top of the eighth inning to save the bacon of starter John Danks. Lillibridge's leaping grab made between Nellie Fox and Harold Baines in left field saved a two run home run and another A's comeback. It also preserved Danks' second win of the season.
This isn't the first time Lillibridge has come up a hero. You may remember some his heroics against the Yankees and Indians earlier this year. The problem that Ozzie Guillen has is that with three highly paid starters, there is no room in the lineup for Lillibridge. Personally, I would like to see him used as a defensive replacement for Juan Pierre in the eighth and ninth innings.
My thoughts, in order, when the ball left Coco Crisp's bat were "oh crap", "holy crap" and "Juan Pierre could have never done that."
All of this coming on a night where the Sox had chance after chance against A's starter Gio Gonzalez, but wound up hitting into three double plays and leaving the bases loaded twice and twelve men on base through the night. What should have been a laugher, went down to a nail biting eighth and Lillibridge's heroics.
Meanwhile, the Sox have to be kicking themselves for three losses in the last week that could have put them at the .500 mark. The first was a week ago Saturday against Detroit, when Jesse Crain served up a two strike, two out gopher ball to Miguel Cabrara. The second was Wednesday's 7-4 loss to Seattle and finally the choke job that was a Friday night loss to Oakland with two out and two strikes. Had the Sox won these three games, not only would they be at .500, but they would also be 2 games out of first place instead of 4½ games out.
Don't get me wrong, they've come a long way since being twelve out a month ago, but if this team is as good as they keep promising us they are, they really to walk the walk, and that means win the close ones.
If the White Sox really want to show the fans and critics alike that they are serious, try winning at least two games in Minnesota next week. That may go a long way in telling us if these guys can get over the hump.
