Quick Shots: White Sox Close In

  • When you look at the Chicago White Sox just completed home stand, one thing comes to mind: It could have and should have been better.  Instead of going 6-4, they could have and should have gone 9-1, with the only acceptable loss a Sunday pounding by Detroit.  Still, the Sox have closed to within 3½ of the divisional lead and two games of the .500 mark.  Now, they need to go to Minnesota and make one, big, loud statement and drive a stake i the heart of the last place Twinkies.  That may be harder than it seems.  Despite all their injuries, the Twinkies have been hot lately, going 8-2 in their last ten.  Their now nine out, although they are still in last place, 2½ games behind Kansas City.
  • Don't think the White Sox are going to be able to dominate in Interleague play like they did last year.  Their next series begins Friday in Arizona.  The D-Backs have been the surprise team in the National League trailing San Francisco by only a game.  Ozzie vs. Kirk Gibson should be an interesting managerial matchup as well.
  •  I am very surprised Gibson has been as successful as he's been, as most former players of his caliber don't do all that well as managers.  He's put together an excellent cxoaching staff including former Tigers manager and Cubs bench coach Alan Trammel, former Rockies and Cubs manager Don Baylor and former D-Back slugger Matt Williams. Charles Nagy, a former standout pitcher for the Indians.  Let's see what happens if they go into free fall like the Indians have and how he reacts.  Honestly though, he's has really shocked me.
  • You have to love Sergio Santos.  Even though he lost a game Wednesday and blew a save Friday night, he comes back in for more theatrics yesterday and gets a friendly call to end the game.  What you have to love about him is he doesn't get down on himself.  What should concern you is that he has lost his feel for his slider.  Without his slider, he's a one pitch pitcher.  Paging Dr. Cooper.
  • No matter what happens between now and the end of this season, Phil Humber is a great story.  A guy who came out of nowhere to keep the Sox in it while players like John Danks, Adam Dunn and Juan Pierre got their acts together.  Humber probably won't get, but deserves, some all-star consideration.
  • Since I only get to watch one Sox game a week (or so it seems) I've been getting my baseball fix by watching the local team, the Milwaukee Brewers.  You really have to pull for these guys.  Ryan Braun is a joy to watch as is Prince Fielder.  Over the weekend, the Brewers swept the Cardinals to take over first place in the NL Central.  It's a great story and Milwaukee's great baseball fans deserve another shot at the playoffs.  In case you aren't familiar with the Brewers, you can catch them against the Cubs for the next four games.  The way Prince Fielder is hitting home runs, I'd seriously consider boarding up the windows in the building across Sheffield Ave.
  • David Stern handing the NBA trophy to Mark Cuban is like Nancy Pelosi handing Anthony Weiner an award for good citizenship.  For all of the wacky things he says and for all of the fines he's received over the years, Cuban is a great owner who finally got his trophy.  Cub fans must be kicking himself that he was cock blocked from buying the Cubs.
  • I wonder if Scottie Pippin is considering retracting his comments about putting LaBron inn the same class as Michael Jordan.  What made Michael the greatest is that he is the most competitive man on earth and he would have never lied down like James did in these playoffs.
  • I'd love to see the Boston Bruins reach deep down and win the next two games of the Stanley Cup finals.  The odds are slim, but I hate to see the Canucks win.
  • As much as I despise the Green bay Packers, I hate to see what the lockout is doing to their fans.  Coming off a Super Bowl victory, the fans up here are hungry for the Packers defense of the title.  Without football, Packer fans will have to participate in the state's second biggest sport: Binge drinking.
