Quick Shots: Ozzie To Marlins. Please Stop
- Can we stop all this Ozzie to Florida crap? I just love how Sox fans are wiling to throw him under the bus as soon as a job opens that he is linked to. If Ozzie does leave, who do you replace him with? Do you people not remember Jerry Manuel? How about Terry Bevington? Do you recall the Jim Fregosi era? Or the Gene Lamont era? Bottom line, Ozzie has had more success than Al Lopez is the late 50's and early 60's. Yet some of you knuckleheads want to run him off. Please, go root for the Cubs.
- For those clamoring for the Cuban Sandwich to be brought up, the problem becomes where would you play him and who would you cut ties with? Juan Pierre is one of the only fast guys on the team and if you were going to blow him up, you'd give Brent Lillibridge first dibs on left because of his speed and his defense. Carlos Quentin is having a big year. Alex Rios isn't going anywhere and neither is Adam Dunn. The Sandwich can't play third better than Brent Morel and he can't play first because Paul Konerko is there. So, what do you do with him? You leave him in Charlotte until September. This also buys the Sox some time with his Major league vesting, which, if they keep him on the farm a little while longer, won't kick in for another year.
- The most frustrating thing about this Sox team is that they have totally underperformed and no one can tell you why. Hear are some thoughts. Coaching? Probably not. Ozzie. No. Too many head cases? Maybe. Too many guys past their prime? Now we are getting warmer. This Sox team (with the exception of Paul Konerko and Omar Vizquel) has not aged gracefully or as projected. Pierre has really lost his game and may have to be a part time player the rest of his career after this season. Adam Dunn is a mess and it may take a reboot next season for him to get out of it. A.J. is a great guy, but his lack of defensive skills are killing the Sox (you know there is trouble when you can't throw someone out on a pitch out.)
- Comedy Central has canceled both of the sports shows they debuted this spring. I'll admit I don't find Norm McDonald funny at all, not on SNL back in the day and not on his show, so that one I completely understand. The Onion SportsDome could have worked if the humor was a bit more consistent. It was funny for about ten minutes of it's thirty minute run time. The parody of Sportscenter was spot on though. Take a bunch of blowhards with a self important attitude, fueled by tag lines and over production and yeah, I'd say they made their point.
- Jack McKeon is off to a good start as manager of the Marlins after benching Hanley Ramirez for being late to a team meeting. There were some disconcerting moments to the 80 year-olds debut however. He kept shouting at the other team when they were on the field to "get off my damn lawn."
