Balk This Way

A win is a win is a win and I for one do not care how the Chicago White Sox get it done.  Last night, a walk off balk gave the Sox a hard fought win over the Kansas City Royals.

The Sox should have never been in that position, but here they were.  Adam Dunn put the Sox ahead with a two run home run in the bottom of the eighth.  I repeat: Adam Dunn put the Sox ahead with a two run home run in the bottom of the eighth. But Sergio Santos, like Cub fans and beer, couldn't hold it.  He surrendered a lead off home run to Eric Hosmer.  Then it got interesting.

The Royals got two more hits off Santos before he hunkered down and got it done.  I've said this about Santos before: He's a tough dude.  The mark of a good closer is even if they blow the save, they can minimize the damage.  Santos has learned to do that.  Sometimes it's not stuff, sometimes it's mental makeup.  And in Santos' case, it's both.

In the bottom of the ninth, A.J. came up for Ramon Castro and singled off Adam Crow.  Crow, by the way, is the Royals lone all-star, which should tell you everything you need to know about the Royals.  After the single, The Savior bunted A.J. to second and eventually third on a wild pitch.  After getting Mark Teahen to wiff, Crow walked Juan Pierre, setting the stage for the balk off.

Whatever gets you through the night.

Unfortunately, the Sox gained no ground of first place Cleveland, but did pick up a game on second place Detroit, now trailing the Tigers by only two games.  The Sox also are back at .500 at 43-43.

Tonight, Jake Peavy goes for the Sox.  Go get 'em, Bulldog!
