Quick Shots: Today's Oxymoron: White Sox Offense
- I keep waiting for a sign from the baseball Gods that the Chicago White Sox have put it together. I thought when they swept the Red Sox in Boston that might be it. Nope. Or when they won a couple of games against the Cubs. Nope. Or when they beat the Royals Monday night on a balk. Still no. I'm running out of patience. When are these guys going to get serious and put together a legitimate run? Losing to a third rate pitcher on a third rate team is NOT the way to win your division. If they can't beat stiffs like Rodrigo Lopez and Felipe Paulino, how do they expect to beat the Twins over the weekend.
- It seems like every time the Sox choke one away to a lousy pitcher and a stiff team, Cleveland and Detroit lose. By all accounts, there is no excuse why this team shouldn't be in first place by now. Cleveland isn't going to be around at the end and Detroit is in a bad place right now, especially after firing their pitching coach. Yet, the Sox can't get their heads out of their collective buttocks long enough to sustain a five to seven game winning streak.
- I hope Phil Humber makes the all-star team. It would be a tribute to all of those who work hard and finally are rewarded for it.
- I know it's too early to call for the head of Chicago Cubs manager Mike
Quade, but don't you find it curious that Clint Hurdle has the Pirates
in second place in his first year with the team while the Cubs are
thankful that they are in the same division as the Astros? I know there
are some that say a manager doesn't make a difference, but I disagree.
- There are rumors going around that Brett Favre may consider playing again this season. How about for the Bears? He could teach Jay Cutler a thing or two about toughness. Of course, Favre, Lovie Smith and Mike Martz co-existing in the same universe is laughable.
- The NFL: needs to lock themselves in a room with the player's union and not come out until they have a new CBA in place. Training camp[s are set to kick off in a couple of weeks and the quality of play will be severely affected if they can't get their act together. I'd hate to see NFL played at a level that resembles an Ole Miss-Vanderbilt game, but that's what's going to happen if they don't report to camp on time. Plus, with the long lockout, a lot of players will report to camp in non-football shape, heightening the odds for injuries.
- Is it just me, or is Tiger Woods missing a major no big deal anymore? You wonder if his salad days as a great golfer are over, not because of the scandals, but because of his injury issues. At least golf is a sport where you can be competitive into your early fifties. If Tiger were a football, basketball or baseball player, he'd be getting written off by now.
- Speaking of injuries, Albert Pujols sure heals quickly, doesn't he? Seventeen days after breaking his left wrist, Pujols was taking live batting practice and will return to the Cardinals lineup tonight. Either the cardinals oversold the injury or Pujols has getting pick me ups from hitting coach Mark McGwire.
