Quick Shots: White Sox Trade Sparks Conspiracy Theorists

  • I know that in this day and age that newspapers will print anything to get people to buy them, but boy, lately it's been unreal.  There are some in the Chicago media who actually believe that the Sox trade with the Blue Jays to Toronto, was made so the Sox could trade Edwin Jackson without having to acquire outfielder Colby Rasmus from Toronto, which the Jays eventually did by flipping Jackson.  The Sox, they say, steered clear of Rasmus because Tony LaRussa is coming back as White Sox manager next season and he and Rasmus don't get along.  Really? Are you kidding me?  That's right they say,  Ozzie is going to bolt for Florida and LaRussa is going to come back to where he started his career.  Oh good.  Then he can leave Mark Buehrle out way too long in a deciding playoff game.
  • Why is it these guys almost want LaRussa to come back?  I think for Jerry Reinsdorf, it corrects a feeling of guilt he's had since he made Hawk Harrelson GM in 1986 and Hawk fired Tony.  I think the Chairman actually beleives that if it wasn't for Hawk, the Genius would have been his manager for thirty years.  The question is, how many championships would he have won.  Let's not forget Tony's diasters in 1988 and 1990 where his hugely talented teams were beaten by teams that weren't nearly as good. And, would the White Sox have become the steroid infested club house the A's were during Tony's watch?  Sorry, I'm not a fan and I'd just assume keep Ozzie.
  • Speaking of Rasmus, his dad, Tony, needs a supersized cup of STFU.  The same day his son was sent to Canada, Tony was telling the Toronto papers how LaRussa ran his son out of St. Louis.  Things like that kill a ballplayers value.  Maybe Tony needs to spend a few days with Archie Manning, the father of two high profile athletes that knows how to keep his mouth shut.
  • Back to the Sox trade. The whole Rasmus thing didn't make sense from the get go.  Kenny Williams even said so Monday, when he was asked if the Sox were trading Jackson for Rasmus and he answered "The trade in that form is not true."  The Sox were clearly after an additional right handed set up guy and they got a good one in Jason Frasor. And launching Mark Teahen was huge, especially when it opened up an extra roster spot for Alejandro De Aza.  Now, the only question that remains is Kenny going to gamble on trading Carlos Quentin and hope the Cuban Sandwich can fill the gap.
  • Speaking of trades, the Bears sent Greg Olsen to Carolina yesterday because he doesn't fit into Mike Martz's offense, where tight ends are merely blockers, not receivers.  It appears that Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith have given Martz carte blanche to do as he sees fit with the offense.  How did that work out last year, fellas? Or in Detroit?  Or in San Francisco?  Seems to me the best thing about Mike Martz is that he'll get Lovie Smith fired faster than Lovie could do it on his own.
  • The Milwaukee Brewers are looking for some help on the left side of their infield.  Look for them to make a play for Jamey Carroll and it that doesn't work out, Rafael Furcal.
  • I don't know how much help Kosuke Fukudome will be in Cleveland.  If that's the best they can come up with, they will be out of it by the end of August.
