Quick Shots: Revenge Not Money Drives Kruetz

  • It's obvious that former Bears center Olin Kruetz isn't all about the Benjamins.  Kruetz walked away from a $4 million payday with the Bears because the Bears wouldn't up the ante to $4.5.  Yet, he has signed a one-year deal with New Orleans for $2 million plus incentives that could get him up to $4 million.  Although it still remains cloudy what happened between Kruetz and the Bears, what has become apparent is that Kruetz felt disrespected when the Bears told him take it or leave it and then signed former Seahwawk Chris Spencer to a deal hours after the negotiations failed.  Kruetz will no doubt bring his ample leadership skills to the Saints, the question is how much does he have left in his tank on the field? We'll see in week two when the Saints and Bears get together.
  • On Sodgate: How come the Green Bay Packers, who play in a much harsher climate than the Bears maintain Lambeau Field immaculately while the Chicago Park District can't do anything with Soldier Field?  As much as I hate turf, it's time they installed it.  Somebody is going to get hurt badly and unfortunately, since it is their home field, it will probably be someone on the Bears.  The NFL and the NFLPA also need to step in here and make some noise and protect the players.  The Park District has been and will continue to be oblivious to these issues.  Kudos for the Bears for refunding admission and parking and feeding people for free.
  • On second thought, maybe we could kill two birds with one stone if the Chicago Park District became the official landscapers of Lambeau Field.
  • The Bears Matt Forte may sit out the pre-season games unless he gets a contract extension saying that he wants to avoid injury. Given the conditions at Soldier Field, do you really blame him?
  • On the Sox sweep of the Twins, we finally got a glimpse of what this team could have been.  Don't give me the song and dance that the Twins are down this year and the Sox took advantage of their injuries, the fact is the Sox have been a punching bag for the Twins the last 2½ seasons.  To go into Minnesota and complete the first White Sox sweep of the Twinkies in Minnesota since 2004 IS a big deal.  But it doesn't mean much if the Indians can't handle the Tigers this week and the Sox hit their usual August wall in Baltimore.
  • Look, it's Alex Rios!
  • Yes, I know when your team wins 7-0, it's hard to criticize the manager, but I do have a bone to pick with Ozzie Guillen.  In the top of the third, with the Sox leading 1-0,. Alex Rios led off the inning with a double. Brent Lillibridge attempted one bunt and whiffed, yet he was ordered to try again and wound up popping out to catcher Joe Mauer (well played, Mauer.) The point is, Lillibridge hit a homer his first time up, so why in the hell is he bunting?  The dogs hid under the futon while I was debating this with Ozzie.
  • When you're down, people tend to want to keep you that way.  Take Adam Dunn.  Now everybody and his brother is criticizing his fitness.  Even Ozzie Guillen took some shots at him over the weekend.  You just wish he could snap out of it, even for a couple of weeks to get everyone off his back, but things have a tendency to go downhill and I think Dunn may be done this year.  Once you accept bad luck, you are apt to keep it around.
  • Steve Williams sure knows how to pick his golfers.  First, 11 years with Tiger Woods led to lots of jack and many major championships.  Then, after Woods dumped him, Williams gets hired by Adam Scott and Scott wins the PGA while Tiger struggles mightily in the final two rounds.  In fairness to Tiger, it's his first tournament off after a long layoff and there's probably so much rust on him, Krylon and a barrel of naval jelly probably couldn't get it off him.
  • Have you seen how much weight Rex Grossman has gained over the NFL layoff.  Holy crap, they should start him at tight end.
  • Happy birthday to one of my favorite people on the planet, former Alabama and UALR basketball coach Wimp Sanderson.  I was privileged to serve as referee between him and former Auburn/VCU coach Sonny Smith for two years at WJOX in Birmingham in the early part of the last decade.  I talked to coach just last week and he is as feisty as ever.
