Bears Take Giant Pounding
Wow. Did you catch the number of the truck that hit the Chicago Bears last night? Living here in the land of cheese, brats, beer and DWIs, makes it even worse, even though it is a meaningless game which means little.Having covered the NFL for several years, I know that teams use the pre-season to work on things. The final score is not necessarily reflective of what a team will do during the regular season, it's more of an opportunity to get players some full speed work and to try some things they may or may not use in the regular season. It also gives them a chance to evaluate the young talent under game conditions.
Still, there was some cause for concern last night on the way to a 41-13 drubbing by the New York Giants. The good, the bad and the ugly:
- Jay Cutler remained upright most of the evening. The offensive line improved a great deal since last week against Buffalo. Cutler looked okay, but he wasn't necessarily helped by his receivers.
- Roy Williams, anytime you want to catch a ball thrown right to you, fine by me.
- Devin Hester may be the number one receiver on this team. If that scares you, join the club.
- The Bears defensive line looked okay. The linebackers without Lance Briggs, not so much.
- Major Harris should be demoted to Private Harris.
- Gabe Carimi is everything we hoped he could be including mean.
- Caleb Haney did not look like a second string quarterback. He looked like a third string quarterback.
- The special teams looked terrible. This is one area I am confident will be improved by the Bears next game.
- Will the Bears ever have a running back who can punch the ball over from the one?
- No matter who the coordinator, quarterback or running backs are, the Bears still fail in the red zone.
- At least the Bears emerged healthy.
