Quick Shots: If The White Sox Weren't Dead Before Last Night, They Sure Are Now
- Unless you are what is termed a "grinning idiot" (i.e. Cubs fan), you should probably remove the 2011 Chicago White Sox from any life support in your mind and let them slip into the night. Getting drummed 8-0 last night by the California Angels of Anaheim, Azuza and Cucamonga is bad enough, but the Sox also blew an opportunity to gain a game on the Tigers.
- It appears Adam Dunn has mentally checked out for this season, forgetting how many outs there were last night. Dunn claims he was trying to get a scuffed ball out of play, but Ozzie Guillen is convinced Dunn thought there were three outs when there were only two. It makes you wonder if Dunn often thinks there are two strikes when there are actually three. Maybe Dunn's problem isn't his diet or his eyesight but his math skills.
- I know I predicted a while back that the White Sox would put a waiver claim on Jim Thome, but let's get real, he's not coming back to the White Sox. The only reason the Sox claimed him was to prevent him from falling into enemy hands. The Sox figure they can still catch the Indians, so why not go for the block?
- This Pat Summit news is devastating. I used to cover womens basketball, both college and pro and I can tell you there are few coaches, men or women like Pat Summit. She is simply the best ever in her sport and should be on a basketball Mt. Rushmore with John Wooden, Bob Knight, Adolph Rupp and Dean Smith. What is really sad is that sometime soon, her sport will lose her voice. Pat Summit is a pioneer in women's basketball, there in it's infancy and someone who helped make it the multi-million dollar sport that it has become. She also helped pave the way for the ABL and the WNBA. This would be the same kind of news if it were Coach K.
- The Cubs are set to pursue both Brian Cashman and Theo Epstein for their vacant GM position. They probably won't get either, but here's another idea. If Tom Ricketts loves the Braves model so much, why not kick team president Crane Kenny to the curb and hire John Schueholz? Now there's a guy who can build an organization.
- The Brewers may have lost yesterday, but the Cardinals are in free fall. With Dave Ducan maybe gone for the rest of the season on family leave, is this the Genius' last stand in St. Louis. More important, is this the way Albert Pujols wants to go out as a Cardinal?
- I know that newspapers are desperate to move product, but Rick Morrissey's asinine column in yesterday's Sun-Times which suggested that Ozzie Guillen should manage the Cubs was totally designed to cause talk and is no way rooted in reality. There is NO WAY on earth that Ozzie would manage the Cubs. In fact, the only person I can think of that would write something so dumb is Skip Clueless and I don't know if Skippy would have even bothered. On the other hand, Peter Gammons thinks it's 50-50 Ozzie could manage the Florida Marlins next year.
- I think Roy Williams may be added to the pile of Lovie Smith refugees who came to the Bears and flopped. How do you remember the Orlando Pace era?
- Awful Announcing has broken down the CBS announcer pairings for the upcoming season. The thing that leaps out at me? NO MORE GUS! Gus is now at Fox hopefully doing insignificant college football games. If he does show up at a game that I want to see, I swear I will turn on the captions or hit the mute and do the play by play myself.
- Next Thursday marks the return of our football prognostication genius, Butkus D. Dogg. He's so excited, I think he just wizzed on my Lazy Boy.
