Quick Shots: Enter The Sandwich
- It will be the most hotly debated topic off season among Chicago White Sox fans: Should the Sox have brought up the Cuban Sandwich sooner? Ozzie makes some sense when he says he didn't have a place to play him and Dayan Viciedo needed to continue to get regular work. On the other hand, maybe his big bat could have won the Sox a few games and narrowed the gap between them and the Tigers (now at six games.) The bottom line, is if he went oh for four yesterday, this discussion would be a moot point.
- I'm of the opinion that trying to protect a 22 year-old from failure is okay. If the Sox had brought Viciedo up in June and he went oh for 30, would that have helped? He is now ready. Don't forget, there is a whole lot more going on besides baseball. The language curve, the dealing with the media, the fan expectations, etc. That's why we have minor league baseball: To develop these kids, especially the ones from different cultures.
- Lost in all of the discussion about the Cuban Sandwich was the fact he drew a walk in his third at bat. He barely had a walk last year during his call up, so that, in and of itself shows his progress to this point. The big question is does this spell the end of the Carlos Quentin era, or will the Sox move Q back to left field next year and play the Sandwich in right?
- The Cuban Sandwich's big day must have made Adam Dunn feel like crap. Of course, Dunn's best day was the first day of the season, so we'll have to monitor the Sandwich over the next few games to see how he does. One thing is for sure: You may see a whole lot less of Dunn between now and the end of the season. Like Ozzie Gullen, I'm still hopeful Dunn can right his ship the rest of the season. That and I am certain that I will win the lottery tomorrow.
- Tyler Flowers is finally starting to look like the player the White Sox were looking for when they traded for him. I don't think A.J. Pierzynski is in danger of getting Wally Pipped, but his playing time could be reduced if Flowers continues to progress. Yet, despite his first career grand slam, there's still that issue of the dropped third strike in the ninth inning.
- The White Sox have now moved past Cleveland into second place in the AL Central. One down, one to go, but it won't come easy. The next three games are against the Twinkies. No Thome, nothing to play for, but they are still the Twinkies and they have their ways of bringing out the worst in the Sox.
- I have to admit, I enjoy the White Sox broadcasts a whole lot better with Wimpy than I do with Stoney.
- Best nickname for Viciedo (besides The Cuban Sandwich) Jackin' Dayan from Jim at South Side Sox. Awesome and much better than "The Tank."
- The Bears offensive line looks much improved from Week 1, keeping Jay Cutler upright the entire time he was in the game. The question about the Bears continues to be can they generate offense when the season starts. The jury is still out on that one.
- How good are the Milwaukee Brewers right now? What a shot in the arm for them to make another world series run. The big question is can they knock off the Phillies, who are everybody's choice to win not only the NL Pennant but the World Series? The answer is yes, they can.
- Three more days until the college football season opens when Wisconsin takes on UNLV. In most places, a team as good as Wisconsin would get a lot of pub, but here behind the Cheese Curtain, the Badgers are third fiddle to the Packers and the Brewers. At least they are ranked above the Bucks and the Milwaukee Wave. Speaking of college football, Butkus D. Dogg returns on Thursday with his first picks of the year..
