Ozzie vs. Kenny? It's A No Brainer

I have a rule in the morning while I am getting ready to do my radio show.  Don't get worked up, stay in a good, relaxed place mentally and save the emotion for 6am when the lights come on.  This morning I didn't quite get there.

On my 4am drive to work this morning, I had the Score on.  Les Grobstein welcomed in a caller who used the handle "Ron from the South Side."  Ron, in my estimation, probably was in his late fifties or early sixties.  He was reacting to Joe Cowley's story in the Sun-Times about the Ozzie-Kenny feud.

"Ozzie has to go", Ron demanded.  "He's too arrogant and there are a lot of managers better than him. He's not the face of the franchise.  Look at the language he uses. Doesn't he know kids are watching.?

BINGO! Ron succeeded in getting me to scream at my radio and wishing it was me, not Les, on the other side of the microphone.

At this point, Les launched into a story about Ozzie as a rookie n 1985, but fortunately I had pulled into the parking lot.

Les probably is too nice to tell you, Ron, but I will:  You are an idiot.

Let me breakdown why you are an idiot, Ron.  First of all, you don't get to sit in a dugout of a major league baseball team if you aren't a little cocky and a little arrogant.  In fact, you don't get to be on a big stage in any profession if you do not possess those two qualities.  So, that argument, by itself, is moot.

Second, you claim that there are a lot of managers out there better than Ozzie.  There may be a couple, but not a lot.  The big question is, Ron, who would you rather see in the Sox dugout? If you are pushing for a return of The Genius, you fail.  If you think Ozzie can be embarrassing, you ain't seen nothing yet.  Terry Francona, Mike Scioscia and Joe Girardi are all tied up and will not be available anytime soon.  Mike Quade might, but he couldn't hold Ozzie's lineup card.  How about Bobby Valentine?  If you think Ozzie is arrrogant, just wait until you see what Bobby V has in his bag of tricks.

We could go re-tread and hire some failure from another team and hope he can get it together in Chicago.  How about Sam Perlozzo?  John Russell?  Bob Gehren?  A.J. Hinch surely is available. Jerry Manuel and Gene Lamont? Been there, done that and got the t-shirt.

The bottom line is, Ron if Ozzie was so inept, would the Marlins continue to pursue him?  Would they consider shipping Logan Morrison to the Sox for Ozzie?  They actually might.  That should speak volumes as to the ability Ozzie brings to the dugout.

Meanwhile, in the article, Cowley clearly lays the blame of the season at the feet of Kenny Williams.  Ozzie didn't trade Daniel Hudson, Kenny did.  Ozzie didn't covet Adam Dunn, Kenny did.  And while Kenny gets the credit for signing players like Jesse Crane, he also takes the blame for Jim Thome not being resigned and the acquisitions of Nick Swisher and Alex Rios.  And then, there was the budget busting pick up of Jake Peavy, who was injured at the time.

It's almost like Iron Chef:   Kenny picks the ingredients and Ozzie gets to cook whatever he can. When you compare Ozzie's record as Sox manger against any Sox manager in my lifetime (including The Genius) Ozzie is far and away the most successful. Do you really think I'd want to see anyone else in the Sox dugout?

As for you Ron, you do have options like become a Cub fan.  You certainly fit the profile mentally.
