Quick Shots: Packers Trump President
- If you don't think the NFL owns the planet, you obviously don't live in Wisconsin. Tomorrow night, President Barack Obama delivers perhaps the most import speech of his presidency and of national importance as he discusses his plan for job creation. Even if you are even the most hard core righty, you have to admit that this is front page news. But because the President's speech conflicts with the opening of the NFL season and the pre-game festivities at Lambeau Field, the NBC affiliates in both Milwaukee and Green Bay will run the game on their regular channels while relegating the President to one of their HD channels. Can you think of any other circumstance where this could happen. Yeah, I didn't think so.
- Isn't it ironic that the White Sox show up at the barn and discover the horse is long gone in Minnesota? If they had played with the urgency that they are playing with now, we might be talking about the playoffs. Of course, the Twins had a bunch of rookies in last night.
- This whole thing about Brian Kelly's language the other day is laughable. He didn't grab the kid by the face mask or whack him in the helmet like previous Irish coaches did (you know who you are, Lou Holtz) he confronted the kid, got in his grill and cussed a blue streak at him. To admonish him for his language or to suggest he should be fired for swearing is a huge joke. Please, let coaches coach. If you are a male who was in athletics and you haven't been sworn at, you have either had indifferent coaches or you were a fifth string player who didn't matter.
- Tony the Useless is back at it again, complaining that playing a 3pm game in St. Louis wasn't fair because of the light and shadows. Gee, Tony, it was in your ballpark, we can only assume that your team scheduled the game. Every time the Cardinals lose to the Brewers, LaRussa is complaining about something. Enough already, Tony. Even George Will is looking the other way. White Sox fans is this who you really want in the dugout next year? Really?
- The White Sox are considering shutting down Jake Peavy for the rest of the season. Maybe they should consider doing the same thing to Adam Dunn.
- We have it on good authority that several fans at the Maryland-Miami game Monday night had to be treated in the stadium infirmary due to either eye issues or shock caused by Maryland's uniform. When I tuned in, I thought there was a storm delay and that ESPN was showing the Batman movie that featured Twoface.
- The Bears are getting ready for the Falcons on Sunday in Atlanta. Honestly, I think they are an 8-8 team and that is being optimistic. The division is much improved this year and the Packers, Lions and Vikings will present a challenge as will the tough schedule. I have not run into anyone who has confidence in this team, but that's what Lovie is counting on. And in the NFL, anything can happen.
- I know Alabama fans are upset that they were leapfrogged by LSU in the latest poll, but it does make sense. It is actually a good thing, especially if LSU and Alabama are 2-3 or 1-2 when they play each other in November. On the other hand, November is a long way away.
- The other thing interesting about the polls is that Boise State is perfectly positioned to be #1 if Oklahoma, LSU and Alabama stumble. Will other teams pass them or will they be allowed to ascend to the top spot and play for a national championship? Chances are, they'll get screwed again by the bigger conferences.
- Speaking of bigger conferences, now that it appears that Texas A&M is heading to the SEC (unless Baylor gets it's way) who will the 14th team be? If I'm the SEC, I'd try to pry either Florida State or Georgia Tech from SEC. Georgia Tech was an original SEC member back in the day.
