Quick Shots: Defense? We Don't Need No Stinkin' Defense

  • Man.  There was more scoring in that Packers-Saints game last night than Tiger Woods in a house of ill repute.  One thing is for sure, both teams need to shore up their defense, although the Packers goal line stand was pretty effective.
  • The other thing we learned last night was that this new NFL kickoff rule sucks and needs to be repealed.  I don't want to spend the entire fall watching Devin Hester take a knee.  If the owners are worried about injuries, someone needs to remind them that this is football and stuff happens.
  • Randall Cobb, the Packer that scored the 108 yard kick return, said God told him to return the kick. Unfortunately, his coach mike McCarthy didn't, but is glad just the same that Cobb scored.  If he hadn't, chances are Cobb would have incurred the wrath of God from McCarthy.
  • The White Sox scored seven runs in the seventh inning yesterday, but lost utility man Brent Lillibridge in the process.  Lillibridge was hit on the hand by a pitcher named Judy.  Seriously. Lillibridge is out for the year with a broken hand, ending one of the few nice stories from this season.  The kid isn't an all-star, but he gives it everything he has when he is out there.  Hand injuries are hard to come back from, but at least he has the winter off to heal.
  • Lillibridge getting injured opens up more playing time for Adam Dunn.  Like we want to see more of that train wreck this year.  The White Sox should just give Dunn and Jake Peavy bus tickets and tell them to be in Arizona in February.
  • The big question is who will join them?  Everywhere you look, everywhere you listen, somebody has a new theory on what the Sox will do in 2012. The biggest question is whether the Chairman will allow the Kenny and Ozzie show to continue.  If not, whoever takes over as GM and manager will have a significant say in how the club will be shaped next year.  Until we reach that point, everything else, no matter how intriguing is just speculation.
  • The Bears are getting ready for their season opener against Atlanta.  You wonder if the lack of defense that we saw in the opener will spill over into the Sunday games.  And, if that is the case, could the Bears win in a shootout.  After watching Green Bay last night, I am very concerned about the Bears.  No matter what Lovie says, I still lack confidence in the Bears offensive line and their receivers, especially Roy Williams.  Look, when a guy like Jerry Jones, who at one time coveted Williams and eventually traded for him, let him go, can we reasonably argue that he is not that good?
  • Lance Briggs and Matt Forte are that good, unfortunately neither one is going to get new paper anytime soon.  Briggs is demanding a re-write of a two year-old deal that was front loaded, while Forte is seeking an increase in his rookie contract numbers, which, he deserves.  Briggs can stamp his feet and turn blue all he wants, but there is no way the Bears are giving him new paper.  Forte may get an opportunity after the season, but the question lingers, is he the right back for a Mike Martz led offense?  There is too much uncertainty right now to decide on Forte, because if the Bears tank the season, perhaps Martz will get kicked to the curb.
  • It appears 85 year-old Joe Paterno is going to be coaching from the pressbox again tomorrow against Alabama.  I love the guy, love what he stands for, love his success, but honestly, Joe Pa should be somewhere in the Caribbean on a Carnival Cruise than coaching a college football team.  Don;t get me wrong, he's a remarkable man for his age, but it is time to let go the ghost.  Maybe he's afraid of winding up like his old friend Bear Bryan, who died a month after announcing his retirement.
  • Most of the buzz surrounding the Michigan-Notre Dame game tomorrow night has to do with Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly's temper.  It's a sad commentary on how far both of these once great programs have fallen.
