Quick Shots: We Need A Weekend From Our Weekend
- That was some sports weekend, wasn't it? It's almost more sane to go back to work where you can get some peace and quiet.
- The weekend started out with the Packers and the Saints playing basketball and the game ending on a goal line stand.
- Saturday had some interesting games and a couple of upsets. There was little drama between Alabama and Penn State where AJ McCarron has become THE guy at quarterback. Bama's defense played another stout game, although there were several breakdowns in the last five minutes of the game that will provide coach Nick Saban with ample teaching moments this week at the Tide readies for North Texas.
- It would have been great if Toledo would have knocked off Ohio State . And they almost did, too. Ditto Fresno State vs. Nebraska.
- If you think Notre Dame Brain Kelly's language was salty after week one, imagine what was coming out of his mouth after that last play loss at Michigan. And as far as the wolves are concerned, Brady Houke will do you proud.
- Thanks to Fox for finally picking up a White Sox game and running it against the Alabama-Penn State game on Saturday. I at least got to see the end of the game, which concluded with an Alex Rios walkoff grand slam. Unfortuately, there was no carry over to yesterday's game.
- The White Sox now face Detroit at U.S. Cellphone Field. The Tigers magic number is 7, so even if they sweep they can't win the division until later this week. Nothing is worse than watching a team clinch the division and eliminate you on your own turf.
- Big Ten teams remember this name: Russell Wilson. He'll be coming to see you soon and he could be the best quarterback in the conference. Wisconsin has played two weak sisters, but has manhandled both of them.
- The Bears did have an impressive victory, but the takeaway for me was five sacks and several failed attempts in the red zone. The Falcons may let with that, but the Saints and Packers won't. Still, the defense was impressive, especially Henry Melton who was in Matt Ryan's uniform the entire afternoon.
- The Lions may have something to say about the NFC North before it's all over. Sure, they beat Tampa, but given their favorable schedule and the gauntlet the Bears and packers have to go through, it sure could get interesting.
- It's nice to see that Cam Newton is doing a good job at his second paying quarterback job. Of course, he had to take a pay cut with the Panthers.
- How bad is Kansas City getting smoked by Buffalo yesterday? Not only do you lose to a team coached by Chan Gailey, you lose to a team with Stuttering Dave on staff.
- Congrats to former Bear Jim Harbaugh on his first NFL coaching victory yesterday. He is doing better than the other former Bear who previously coached the 49'ers, Mike Singletary, who is now in Minnesota and whose team got smoked by San Diego yesterday. The Vikings are coached by a former Bear, Les Frazier. All in all, three former Bears are head NFL coaches: Harbaugh, Frazier and Carolina's Ron Rivera. Four if you count the Jets Rex Ryan who never played for the Bears, but is the offspring of a former Bears coach and was a ball boy for the team in the '80's.
- Ohio State's dismissal of assistant Gymnastics coach Paul Hamm is a joke. It's not that his actions may have warranted it, but the hypocrisy of OSU claiming that Hamm failed to meet the "high standards" the
university has for its coaches. . Hamm was arrested
on assault charges following a drunken encounter with a taxi driver and the Columbus Police. This from a university that knowingly kept a lying head football coach on staff until they needed to throw him under the bus to appease the NCAA. In truth, because Hamm is from a "non-money" sport, firing him is easy, because who the hell cares about gymnastics? In truth, they probably should have sent him to rehab and then reinstated him following his participating in a program. Chances are, if his name was Tressell, they would have.
