They Gone!

I wish the Major League season were like an elimination tournament so that when you get eliminated, you simply stop playing.  I think everyone affiliated with the Chicago White Sox would agree that probably would be the best thing for this team.

Last night, with their top pitcher on the mound, the Sox couldn't even beat perennial doormat Kansas City.  Ozzie is right, the fight left the dog a long time ago and these guys are like Stepford wives, merely roboticly going through the motions.

Here's what I would like to see the next couple of weeks before the end of the Sox version of the Bataan Death March:

  • Play as many kids as possible.  Give DeAza, Viciedo and anybody else a real shakedown cruise.  Let's see what they bring to the table for next year.
  • Send Adam Dunn and Alex Rios home now.  Why not?  Their seasons were over in April anyway.
  • Plan a big last home appearance for Mark Buehrle, because if you see him next year, it will be in another uniform.
  • Now that the team is out of contention, step forward and make an announcement now about next year and who will be leading the team.
It has been an awful summer for baseball.  The promise of "all in" faded to black in May and even though there was some excitement around the all-star game, this team stunk all year.  There is plenty of blame to go around, but my biggest takeaway from everything I've read and seen this year is that these players are fat, happy and lazy.  That lies squarely at the feet of the manager.  Either Ozzie needs to learn to stop coddling people or he needs to head to Miami.  It's time someone lit a fire under these boys.  As an older club with little support from the farm system, their window for the playoffs and a possible second championship is closing rapidly if not about to slam shut.

It's time that this team get a little hungrier and play with a lot more fire in their bellies.  The Titanic has hit bottom.  The band can stop playing at any time.
