Quick Shots: Bears Run Into Stiff Brees

  • Well, that didn't take long.  All of the optimism surrounding the Bears opening week domination of Atlanta is now tempered with the scenario where the aliens bring back the offensive line and Mike Martz. In fact, the Bears broke down in all phases yesterday. The Saints defense sacked Jay Cutler at will and knocked three Bears from the game with significant injuries.  And to think, the Packers, a team that beat the Saints, are next.
  • If it wasn't football, Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz would be charged with attempted murder for his game plan yesterday.  The intended target was Bears quarterback Jay Cutler.
  • I've decided if the Bears are to have any chance against the Packers on Sunday, the Bears organization needs to have Martz kidnapped and dumped blindfolded in the woods in Michigan and hope he can't find his way back until at least the day after the game.  That may be the Bears best chance of keeping it close and of keeping Cutler out of body cast.
  • If Gabe Carimi has knee damage and is out for the remainder of the season, he would be the second Bears first round offensive lineman who blew a knee in his rookie season.  Marc Columbo, who was drafted in 2002, did it too and never really took off as a Bear (he has had several productive years with Dallas and Miami.).  In fact, the last successful Bears first round offensive line pick was Keith Van Horn in 1981.
  • The lack of depth in the Bears secondary was evident yesterday as injuries took their toll and allowed Drew Brees the opportunity to make big plays.
  • Onto an even more depressing topic as the White Sox play their final few games.  They won yesterday, breaking a seven game losing streak.  The Sox are four games under with little chance of getting back to .500 before the season ends.  It gets interesting after their final game.  No doubt, the Sox will sell a lot of scorecards next year.
  • One of the Blackhawks in camp right now is goalie Ray Emery, formerly of Ottawa, Philadelphia and Anaheim.  Emery is a former top flight net minder, but discipline problems and serious injuries (he had part of his hip replaced with part of his leg.) He auditioning for the backup role behind Cory Crawford, but a goalie of his ability and experience would be a huge help to the Hawks team, hopefully setting up another 1-1A situation like the Hawks had in 2009-2010 when the Hawks won the Stanley Cup.
  • So far, Oklahoma is the most balanced team I've seen in college football.
  • LSU's defense is scary good.  So is Alabama's  so far, but they will be under the gun Saturday against Arkansas.  That game is not a done deal by any stretch.
  • Auburn's winning streak came to an end against Clemson on Saturday.  Ironically enough, Clemson coach Dabbo Swinney is an Alabama alum. The name Dabbo sounds like one of the seven dwarfs, may the eighth dwarf that they had chained to a pot beillied stove because he was evil.
  • Congratulations to Vanderbilt for opening up at 3-0 this year.  No, they won't go undefeated, but it's always nice when the little guy gets to bite back. The only problem Vandy will have is if they keep it up and gain some national attention, someone (like Kansas, perhaps) will come knocking and try to lure Coach James Franklin away.
