If Martz Is To Blame, It's Lovie's Shame

As the Bears prepare for, as they like to call them up here in Wisconsin "THE SUPER BOWL CHAMPION GREEN BAY PACKERS", one thing is for certain:  If Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz doesn't dial down his jailbreak offense, Bears Quarterback Jay Cutler will not leave Soldier Field alive on Sunday.

You can't be successful in the NFL offensively if your Quarterback is in traction and that's where Cutler is headed if he has another day like he did last Sunday in New Orleans. And if you are going to level accusations at Martz, then you must also aim your blame finger at the Bears head coach, Lovie Smith.

Lovie is one of those coaches who wants players to play and coaches to coach.  You haven't heard any reports of the years of Lovie having angry words with anyone.  He's as laid back as they come.  And when it comes to Martz, he's laid off.

Sure, Martz gave Lovie a huge opportunity when he made Lovie defensive coordinator in St. Louis.  And Lovie apparently has not received the memo that he, Lovie and not Martz should be running the Bears.  Martz's offense is great when you have Tory Holt, Marshall Faulk, Issac Bruce and Orlando Pace in their primes, but Lovie's enabling of his former boss is mind numbing.

Last year during the bye week, Lovie needed some help from the imposing line coach, Mike Tice, to get it through Martz's thick skull that Cutler was going to get killed if he didn't tone it down. He did and the Bears made it all the way to the NFC Championship game.  In the off-season, the Bears went out and acquired a few players who fit Martz's preferred M.O. Yet, the offense isn't really working. Because the Bears receivers can't catch.  And their line can't block.

And if Martz doesn't balance it out and give the Bears a chance to run, he's going to make it so the only way Cutler will be able to get off the grass is with a Spackle knife.

Lovie Smith, if he hasn't already, needs to sit Martz done and tell him, in no uncertain terms, to blow up his playbook, balance the offense or face immediate dismissal.  Someone else could call plays for the Bears (Tice comes to mind) and that Martz may be a legend in his own mind, but in Chicago he's about as popular as Dave Wannstedt.

I've always thought that the Bears coaches were a pretty arrogant bunch, treating the media and the fans as if we were blind.  And even if we were, my dad (who is blind) can tell that this is not working.

It would be nice to send the Packers back beyond the Cheese Curtain with an "L".  It' s much better then sending Jay Cutler home with a toe tag.
