Quick Shots: Fire Everyone!
- If you are a depressed Bears fan this morning, you don't live 40 miles south of Green Bay in rabid enemy territory. And the thing that disturbs me the most about yesterday's game was the fact that the Packers didn't come in and wipe the field with the Bears, the Bears lack of execution killed them.
- The Bears defense allows two quick Packer scores. Now you are down 14-0 and now Mike Martz has all the encouragement he needs to start chucking the ball around the yard. Sure, it worked for a while, but if you don't run the ball, you can't control the clock and the Bears were piss poor at controlling the clock yesterday.
- The dropped passes were unreal. Notice the Packers receivers don't drop passes thrown right at them. Roy Williams, Johnny Knox, what are your excuses.
- If I ran the Bears, Frank Omalye would be waived this morning. Seriously. All the guy does is commit stupid holding penalties or jump offiside in critical situations. I don't care how short you are on offensive lineman, Frank is absolutely useless. Cory Graham, you're next.
- Can we all agree now that Mike Martz is killing this team with his play calling and the fact that he won't allow Jay Cutler to call an audible?
- I am not going to pin this loss on Cutler. He had the time, he made some of the throws. Some of his throws were dropped. What else can you expect from the guy.
- If you compare Aaron Rodgers to Cutler, the biggest difference is Rodgers has the time, his receivers catch the ball and the patterns aren't just quick slants and screens. And, he's got a running game, albeit an average one behind him. Cutler plays in an offense that is percision timing, his line can't protect him or run block and some of his receivers would have a tough time in the arena league.
- Bears wide receiver coach Darryl Drake should stop trying to cover for his group and start being a lot more honest with everyone. Of course, the only honest statement he could make is "we suck."
- Next Sunday against Carolina will be interesting. I sure Ron Rivera would love a win over a coach that cast him adrift after coaching his defense to the Super Bowl.
- Speaking of getting fired, after losing two of three to Kansas City, I hope Jerry Reinsdorf has reached the conclusion that Ozzie Guillen has worn out his welcome. Loyalty aside (and I'll always be an Ozzie fan) the White Sox need a new voice, not named LaRussa.
- Finally, in my lifetime, there are only two coaches in my memory that Chicago sports fans wouldn't be willing to drive to the airport: One, of course, was Mike Ditka, although near the end of his rein, I think many fans were tired of his act (sort of like Sox fans are with Ozzie). The other was Phil Jackson. Everyone else, including names like Durocher, Baker, Piniella, Wannstedt, et. al, all jumped the coaching shark with fans long before they were let go. One exception might be Jack Pardee who bolted for Washington as soon as he had the opportunity. The Bears were just starting to get it together when he left.
- I wonder how much different the Bears would have been had Jerry Angelo succeeded in hiring Nick Saban as head coach instead of Lovie Smith. Just wondering.
