Quick Shots: Bears, White Sox and More
- Yesterday's Bears game against Carolina was like having root canal without Novocaine. The Bears had ample opportunity to put the Panthers away, but as Brian Billick wisely called it, put themselves in sleep mode in the second half. At least they ran the ball successfully.
- Memo to Thom and Brian: Anytime you boys want to remove your lips from Cam Newton's backside, fine by me.
- Matt Forte has just made his demo reel for potential teams after this season. The Jets could have sure used him last night.
- The difference between the Bears win last week and their loss to Green Bay a week ago was simple: The Bears established the run and their receivers caught the ball when thrown to. Sure, this was only the Panthers, but at least there was improvement from week three.
- The Lions defense could really give the Bears offense fits while I don't think the Bears have an answer for Calvin Johnson.
- It appears as if Tito Francona may be a little too rich for the White Sox blood. The search, as I understand it, has three names on the list: Sandy Alomar Jr., Davey Martinez and Tony Pena. Two of the three, Martinez and Pena are involved in the playoffs. Before you play the no experience card on Martinez and Alomar, realize that Ozzie Guillen had never managed a game in his life before coming to the White Sox in 2004. Pena, of course, managed Kansas City a few years back and had little success. Don't hold that against him. In any case, each of the three are good baseball men. I prefer Martinez because he's learned under the tutelage of Joe Maddon who could be one of baseball's top three managers.
- Would Theo Epstein be crazy enough to come to the Cubs? You would think that he would right the ship in Boston, then take off a hero. But , that might not be the case. It's amazing that such a successful organization like the Red Sox can throw the people that made them successful under the bus so quickly, but they cater to the fans a lot in Boston and Red Sox nation was demanding heads after their September collapse.
- I didn't get to see much college football on Saturday, but what I saw was interesting. I think when Texas A&M arrives in the SEC, they will arrive without Mike Sherman, who may not last the season there. Wisconsin exceeded expectations Saturday night against Nebraska, but realize this ain't your Daddy's Nebraska, just like the Florida team that Alabama stomped was not your Daddy's Gators.
- Don't look now, but Georgia may have righted their ship and positioned themselves to win the SEC East.
- Kudos to the Ray, Cardinals and Tigers who, despite playing in hostile environments, matched serves with their opponents in their respective divisional series. The Brewers came away as the only team over the weekend to lead their series 2-0.
- Speaking of the Brewers, the state of Wisconsin went 4-0 in big games this weekend with two playoff wins by the Brewers, Wisconsin drubbing Nebraska and the Packers beating the Broncos. I don't know if that has ever happened before around here, but I can tell you the inhabitants are bordering on giddy.
