Quick Shots: Are You Ready For Some...Wait, Never Mind
- Hank Williams Jr. picked an unfortunate time to show his redneck side yesterday on Fox News. I am not clear if the MNF theme is gacked forever, or just last night. I'd really like it to be back Monday night for the Bears-Lions game. As for Hank Jr., his comments, as dumb as they were, don't bother or offend me. People have opinions these days and it seems like if someone offers a strong one, they get ostracized. I hope Faith Hill keeps her mouth shut.
- If ESPN moves to replace Hank, they may turn to their BFF, Kenny Chesney. The only question is will Kenny take any flack for replacing a legend? Of course, he's a hot commodity and Hank Jr. is pretty much yesterday's news.
- Word from the White Sox is that the kids will be playing next summer. And that means an experienced manager like The Genius or Terry Francona probably won't want to lead them. Whoever the Sox bring in, needs to commit to teaching fundamentals in all phases of the game, something the Sox have clearly lacked the last couple of years. Despite the urgency that Kenny Williams needs to show, two of his three candidates are still involved in the playoffs.
- The Sun-Times reported this morning that Francona could join Theo Epstein in Chicago if the latter became the Cubs GM. I thought Francona and Epstein were unhappy with each other.
- Cub fans who are getting a woody imagining Theo Epstein or Andrew Friedman running their team, seem to forget the excitement generated when Andy MacPhail, who at the time was wildly successful running the Twinkies, was brought in to run the Cubs. By the time his tenure was over, Cub fans formed a convoy to drive him to the airport.
- I'm really enjoying the Texas-Tampa series. I thought maybe the momentum from making into the playoffs on the last pitch of game 162 and then the first game win in Texas would really spark the Rays, but Texas is proving they are a pretty good team, capable of beating anyone in the American League.
- The Brewers have a chance to move on to round two of the playoffs with a win tonight in Arizona. Ron Roenicke should get high marks for the way that he's aligned his pitching rotation in this series. Using Zack Grinke in three days rest because he pitches better at home and Shaun Marcum on the road where he has been the most successful, is pretty smart managing. Not every manager would play the angles like that.
- Do you think Calvin Johnson will be drooling in the Lions film room today when he watches the tape the Bears secondary from last Sunday. This could be the biggest Bears Monday night disaster since the night they retired Butkus and Sayers numbers in the pouring rain.
